I know this has to be asked a lot here but I've been tirelessly searching threads for an hour and can't find an answer. For my 22 birthday I am looking to purchase an AK but I am at a loss for where to purchase it. I am not particularly interested in building something from the ground up and so far general guidance has steered me towards the Arsenal SGL-21. I'm not looking for a match grade AK (if there ever was such a thing) it will be my first one and I believe you get what you pay for to a certain extent. I'm comfortable in that price range but numerous forums call into question the quality of both Arsenals workmanship and the Saiga platform they originate the rifle from. Is there any validity to any of this or is it just brand loyalty? Thank you for making a noob feel comfortable enough to ask this question.

No Arsenals are great AK's you cant go wrong, and from what I remember and they do have a 1 year warranty. So if you see any probelms with it, just send it back in, after all it isnt like its a wasr.

Yah, watch out for information overload, happened to me also, check the marketplace, there are alot of good deals, I got a Vector AK47 there, Personally I think you will be fine with a Saiga or Arsenal or even the dreaded Wasr, whatever you do just don't get one of these.........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03wXAk_bXVAI didn't buy fireworks on the 4th of July, if I want fireworks I'll call my ex-wife.Comment

Dreaded WASR? You need to look around more they have built a much better reputation for themselves over the years. The new king of the crap AK is the IO CASAR...Yah, watch out for information overload, happened to me also, check the marketplace, there are alot of good deals, I got a Vector AK47 there, Personally I think you will be fine with a Saiga or Arsenal or even the dreaded Wasr, whatever you do just don't get one of these.........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03wXAk_bXVAComment

Personally I'll never buy an Arsenal because of their goofy integral magazine lock. The design of the AK magazine release makes magazine locks horrible to deal with and I'd much rather have one featureless. I'll convert a Saiga or buy a WASR before I even consider an Arsenal.Beretta PX4 Storm .40 S&W (Round Count 3,050) | Yugo M72 | Romy M44

By "dreaded" I was referring to the long standing debate over Wasr VS. Every other AK ever made, personally I think they are just fine provided they have been checked out, these guys "certify them", no excessive mag wobble or canted sights, http://www.hendersondefense.com/stor...ines-50p10.htm. Lol yah i saw the Casar at BIG 5 when I first started looking, the salesman straight up tells me "it's a piece of junk don't buy it"....nuff said.I didn't buy fireworks on the 4th of July, if I want fireworks I'll call my ex-wife.Comment

Ah ok, yea I hand picked my WASR from about 5 of them that the store had on stock. Walked out the door with it that day for less then 300 bucks back in 2006. Off topic but.....God bless Texas, one of the few states left where a man can own a gun and not be made to feel like he's a criminal.......http://www.texasgunlaws.org/

DEFINITELY buy an Arsenal you will NOT regret it. Just make sure to NOT get the sgl23! Horrible mag lock (i have one). Its easy to swap out but its just better to get the 21 after all they are the same price, why waste time changing the mag lock. Arsenals are the top of the line. Much more eye catching than a WASR and much better quality as well.sigpicComment

Q: Is there a limit on the number of rounds a magazine may hold?
A: No. The only limit on magazines in Texas is the number of rounds you are physically able to cram into the thing and/or carry and/or afford.

OP: check out AK's made by Interarms too. They're seen as the rifle in between century builds & Arsenals. Arsenals look great to me but they're pretty damn pricey.R.I.P. Thomas C.Originally posted by d4v0sMy girlfriend and i used froglube last night in a pinch and it works great.Comment

SGL-21's have no factory magazine lock, you are thinking of the SGL-23.The best AK is the one you build yourself.

Yes, but you'd have to configure for featureless to go with 11 or greater round count mags from a legal perspective.Last edited by stix213; 08-25-2011, 7:45 PM.Comment

Saiga is one of the highest quality factory made AK based rifles. There are the occasional "vodka specials," but don't let that keep you from one. I own several Saigas myself, but can't speak to Arsenal specifically (I converted my own Saiga instead of paying Arsenal to), but they are generally regarded to be high quality AK's for the price.I know this has to be asked a lot here but I've been tirelessly searching threads for an hour and can't find an answer. It would be best to inspect the rifle before you pick up any AK of any brand. Check for canted sights, gas tube, etc. No AK manufacturer has a perfect quality record.Comment
