Hypothetically if someone gave a relative a handgun and sometime later passed away before a transfer could be done what should that person do? Hypothetically speaking.

The giver died, or the reciever died? Define relative, it matters in this situatio, hypothetically. -
We need some more "Hypothetical" information.

I cannot answer your question but in order for someone else to they are going to have to know the relation the deceased was to you. Father, Grandfather, Brother, Cousin.

How much time has passed between the illegal transfer and now?
Most illegal firearms transfer crimes have a one year statute of limitations in California, as long as the receiver of the firearm isn't a minor or a prohibited person. Worst case scenario is a three year statute of limitations.
So, in theory, if my friend illegally gave me a handgun three years ago without doing a transfer at a dealer, there would be no way for California to prosecute today because of the amount of time that had passed.
I could legally keep the handgun without registering it, or I could send in the voluntary registration form to get the handgun in my name to avoid potential hassles with uninformed law enforcement officers.__________________
