I have had a safe stolen from a stock room. One of the x employes who was friends of my land lords son cut the floor in another suite crawled into a craw space and stole a safe with 3k in it. The safe was mounted with 2 half inch red heads in concrete it did not stand a chances. I let my anger get the best of me and busted his nose and eye socket. He was hospitalized for 3 days. The local pd went to a residents I was staying at in search of me. Asked me what happen . I asked them if I was under arrest so I could wave my right to give a report. They said no because no charges were files however the DA had 1 year to file.So I told them he was the only one who knew about the safe.A week before he was asking me if I had any money that I could loan hem in the safe as I said NO. It has been 5 years senses this happened . When I was searching the outer suite trying to firer out how they got in. I found a elope that came up missing that was going o be shipped so a buddy with 600 bucks for sales commission . He stole that and sent my buddy a empty elope . I would say I used bad judgment and risk losing my firearms cant say I would want to act like that again.

I know someone who had their safe broken in to. A hole was drilled in to the back, then it looked like some kind of saw was used cut a jagged square hole in the back. They then opened the lock from the back and opened the door. What a mess. Probably took an hou to do it.

Lesson learned: bolt your safe down, place against a wall or two, bolt it to one (or both) of those walls, and have insurrance.

I was storing someone else's 12-gun cabinet while he was out of the country. It was an older one rather cheaply made. Probably had 4 long guns, 6 handguns and some reloading equipment in it so it was heavy.

Anyways our house was broken into, they knocked it down and broke off the end of their crowbar trying to get it open. They did get the bottom part of the door slightly bent open. The prybar piece was actually inside the cabinet. We bent the door back by hand and it was good as new (for what it was.)

So even those cheap cabinets are better than nothing.

I don't suggest "bolting" your safe down, what you need is to prevent someone from lifting it...some people make their safe heavier, then crooks just knock the safe over and open it like a tin can.

Here's my suggestion, and remember, 8yrs as an ironworker/foreman, I kinda know a little about steel...

if you mount it in concrete, drill holes in the concrete at each corner of the safe, next drill about a 1/2"-3/4" hole in the concrete so that you can fit a 3-4' piece of rebar in it to meet the holes in the safe, use rebar that matches the diameter of the hole you drilled, the length of the rebar depends on the height on your safe, you want the rebar to be as long as the hole is deep + as high as you can put it in your safe. If you want it even more secure, have someone put a little 1/2" weld on the inside of your safe and the rebar, also epoxy the rebar into the concrete.

if you have to put your safe in the house, that involves more steel, as floor joists don't hold as much as you think
Good saddles ain't cheap...and cheap saddles ain't good

I work for a safe company and I can tell you that the majority of gun safes can be side punched and open in under a minute if you know what you are doing.

Minimum 5/8" Hilti anchors in all four corners is mandatory. Install in a corner. I have installed 500 pound safes by myself with a standard dolly, so without anchors, its quick and easy to roll away. Anchors, no matter how elaborate can be lopped off easily with a sawzall, but thats just more time to do it.

Absolute best advice is to have an alarm system at home. With an alarm blaring, the burg wont spend the time getting into a safe, especially in a residential area.

My uncles house got burglarized. They hauled his 1k lb+ browning safe down stairs, loaded it up into his pickup and stole both truck and pickup. Days later the safe was found pryed open out in a field. 7 rifles 5 handguns along with jewerly and cash valued more than 300k.

Any safe/RSC is better than nothing. At least it keeps the kids and nosy people out. The better the safe the more time your buying that It'll take some creep to cut it open. Theres some cool pics of safes broken into and burned up on www.sturdysafe,com.
