Thanks. mossy!! I went back to the BATF website and put AOW in their search box. The information I wanted was right there. A vertical fore grip is a no no unless installed by a person licensed to manufacture NFA weapons. Then it can be transfered back to me using a FORM 4.
      P.S. What a crock!

Technically a VFG on a pistol (without proper permit is a no-no) but I'm curious if you had the grip pictured below, but kept it in the "folded up" position, if that would qualify. It would certainly be a shaky situation to be caught in (wouldn't want to have to explain it to the judge) but in its folded form it's technically NOT a VFG... hmmm.

Also, I have an AFG on my AR pistol and I'm perfectly comfortable with it, but some people are not.

Just install a bipod. Perfectly legal, folds up, AND you can use it as a front pistol grip

Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

AFG on pistol was ruled as not creating an AOW by BATFE. Furthermore, it doesn't conflict with CA law because of the fixed magazine (though it'd be ok on the TC as well because it's not semi auto).

Putting it on a featureless AR rifle would be serious grey area time, but as already mentioned the BATFE has already ruled that its fine on a pistol.

I don't understand how it's a "gray area" on a featureless. You CANT get a pistol style grasp on it.

A bipod would be more gray than an AFG on a featureless.
