Next Purchase: Shotgun or AR Build

I'm trying to decide on my next firearm purchase. I was thinking of getting a Shotgun combo like the one on sale at big 5 this week. Where I get an 18 1/2" and 28" barrel. Or I could start my first AR build. I'm also open to other suggestions. Thanks!

The questions that most people will ask are....

What is the intended purpose of this purchase? Range use? Home defense use? To use in a class/course? Cool points with friends?

While both a shotgun and AR fills all of those requirements, it's a matter of personal preference & opinion.... and that's what you'll get from this thread.

A shotgun would be more practical. It would be more cost effective, best for HD, and you can shoot it at ANY indoor range-whereas with an AR, you're limited as where you're able to shoot.

First off, do you already own an HD firearm? If not, then shotgun for sure. Otherwise, AR build..

I was in the same boat not long ago, it was between an 870 and an Ar build.
I went Ar because , a shotgun to me isn't a recreational firearm. I dont shoot skeet or go duck hunting , so it's only role is Home Defense.I had an 870 super mag about 14 years ago, I loved it, but ended up trading it to Tracy Guns and Ammo for a beautiful Russian sks.

Long story short, I have tons more fun with my newly built AR than I ever did with the shotgun. And my Ar is plenty good for home protection, provided you try to find a neighbor friendly ammunition. Plus , if you pick up a conversion kit for the Ar , you can plink all day with .22LR . Change the upper and it's a sniper rifle, change the upper again , it's a crossbow. Pretty sure there is shotgun uppers too.
          Endless fun.

To add some information, I have a .40 Beretta that was purchased for home defense and a Mosin Nagant 91/30. I like the shotgun because I do like shooting skeet and it's another home defense gun. I liked the AR because it's modular, like mentioned above. I can start out with a dedicated 22LR upper to plink and take to an indoor range and then move on to 5.56/.223.
