Great story, thank you for posting it. It's reassuring when people do the right thing, and even better when they're rewarded for doing it.

I had to smile when I read then Sgt. McGinty used the 1911 to kill 5 enemy soldiers charging during the engagement; I guess 1911's aren't as obsolete as some think, nor do they require $1k worth of tuning to be effective, just a good (or in this case great) man behind the trigger.

I'm surprised the auction house didn't know the 1911 was stolen. If it was stolen from a display, pretty sure it was reported as such. I guess the info doesn't make it past state lines?

          Anyway, great story. Thanks OP.

So true! My Colt 1911 A1 made in 1913 is incredibly effective, shoots deadly accurate and has had no tuning done to it what so ever. One of the best guns if not the best gun ever made in my opinion. I am very glad he got it back, I would be really upset if mine ever got lost or stolen.

That is an awesome story. You don't see many guys who are willing to uphold values like that anymore.

Great story. Amazing what a small firearm can mean to someone.

A lot of agencies and states still weren't fully automated with their databases in the mid seventies when it was stolen.

Amazing story, and the textbook image of integrity by the man who purchased it from the auction house.

In the end, he ended up with a 1911 owned by a Pearl Harbor Medal of Honor Recipient. How could it get any better, Audie Murphy's 1911 or John Wayne's?
