So long as it completely encloses the gun, a portable gun safe with whatever locking mechanism satisfies the 'locked container' for transport; it can be anywhere in the vehicle.

yep, I use a gunvault with the rubber finger shaped depressions. Almost instant access; and 100% legal. (Many LEO's won't agree but you'll beat'em in court) I call it the "poor man's CCW"

That's how I do it. Just be sure the gun is unloaded.
