I like 308 more. The models of rifles I like are more common in .308 vs 30-06 and it is cheaper. With optics as well, there are more optics set for .308 than 30-06. The mil/NATO market opens up a broader customer base for more options.

I personally prefer the .308. The main reason being that I have one :P In all honesty, my reasoning is that it's a large enough to load to get the job done on just about any animal in North America, and it doesn't kick as hard which makes it better (IMO) for getting back on target and therefore better for combat application.

I prefer .308 as it's more readily available. 30.06 will give you more distance but harder to find inexpensive surplus. (In basic training we had to qualify at 500 yards with M1 Garand)

Just looking to buy the Rifle then accessorize. Bolt action, it would have to be for targets, plinking, and possibly hunting and lots of aftermarket parts for it.

Do you want a rifle or a barbie doll? Save your money and buy exactly what you want, instead of having to blow even more to upgrade to what you actually wanted in the first place. No bolt action in the pricerange you listed is going to serve every need, nor are they going to have a ton of aftermarket parts.

I suggest saving up about $600 and then you'll have enough to get something slightly better than "bottom of the barrel". Keep in mind that a scope is still going to run you another $200-$500 once you figure out exactly what you want from an optic.

I stand corrected for some reason I was thinking that the 30-06 had a larger rim.

Different rifles for different purposes. A hunting rifle will have a light weight barrel that will heat up enough throw off your aim pretty quickly. A heavy target barrel is too heavy to be any fun to carry through the hills. If you want a plinker get yourself a far more affordable 22 or possibly 223. You'll save enough in ammo to easily pay for the 22. If you want a hobby to accessorize buy a Ruger 10-22 .22LR rifle for $200 and accessorize the crap out of it - stocks, barrels, trigger groups are all readily available.

Just bought a brand new Ruger 10/22. What are the pros and cons about a .223 also is savage a good manufacturer?

                          Look at CZ!

They have the best quality and value IMO.

Buy a 91/30 Mosin bare unit and a Monte Carlo stock - Then grab 400+ rounds of 7.62x51.

                              All-in waaaaaay under $300.

Poor mans 30-06 for targets and deer/hogs.

Upgrade when the rifle is holding you back.....

You aren't that far away - Pay for the range time and I'll supply the rifle and ammo so you can try the combo out...

Depends what your purpose is. As stated above, 30-06 will easily outperform 308 when you get into heavier bullets. 308 is more comfortable and economical to shoot.
