    Mythbusters Ice bullet test

For those of you that saw this one (its an older episode testing a "ice bullet" fired from an assassins rifle so the bullet melts after impact). Well today as I was prepping stuff to go shooting tomorrow got to thinking about this. What if the bullet was saboted similar to some blackpowder projectiles or some shotgun slugs (I think it was Brenke that used Hourglass shaped slugs that are sabotted). once the bullet leaves the barrel the "ice" bullet sabots fall away leaving the bullet to travel down range. might be something for them to readdress.

Boredom makes you wonder weird things LOL

I always wondered what if instead of a powder powered projectile it was one of those large bore air rifles. In theory the charge would actually be colder than ambient temperature because of the rapid release of pressure.

Practical question: Even if you could do it, don't the pieces of sabot flying downrange kind of negate the whole ninja assassin "my bullet melted leaving no evidence" thing? :P

Perhaps. But is the point to make the bullet untraceable (barrel grooves) or make it so that there was "no bullet" to begin with? If it's the former, they could just use a frangible round.

After all, forensics experts would probably still arrive at the conclusion that a bullet of some sort was the culprit based on an examination of the wound.

I thought about making a bullet out of sawdust and water and freezing it. I think it is called something like piecrete. When mixed at the right ratio, the sawdust and water mix takes much longer to melt than plain ice and it is extremely hard to break. I saw something about it on tv. It may have been modern marvels.

A 12 gauge slug made of frozen meat or fat would certainly be icky and confusing.

I would email them... They have shows all the time about viewers responses to the results the come up with.

I for one would prefer to go 100% Bond villain and shoot either golden FMJs or JHPs with a diamond ballistic tip. ^_^

Mythbusters built a boat out of it and it actually did quite well (lasted 20 minutes before they were forced to return to shore, 30 minutes total before the boat was useless), but it does still melt quickly at room temp.

You're not going to handload Pykrete bullets, load them into a magazine, and then drive for 1/2 hour to shoot someone without a dry-ice loaded cooler.

What if they got sweat from Chuck Norris and froze it? Would it work better than frozen tiger blood?

I know, getting the sweat in the first place is gonna be tough.

that's actually a common misconception. Chuck Norris doesn't actually sweat; he is so cold-blooded that water droplets condense on him at room temperature.
