    Q about 1911 mags

Hey just bought my first 1911 (kimber eclipse custom II) I read some bad reviews on kimber mags, wondering which ones are the most reliable. Also I found some brand new checkmate mags at a great price, was curious if anyone had any experience with these. Thanks

    Only buy good mags.
    Wilson work well.

The least expensive good magazines are Mec-Gar

Avoid Pro-Mag; Metalform is hit and miss -- a Colt logo means nothing.

Before you spend money - Shoot your factory mags first - 1911s are a bit funny -

I've had great luck with Checkmate mags, they work better in my Commander than Wilson 47 D's due to being a bit thinner and slightly different profile at the feed lip area.

Really? That's good news, anyone else attempted to use these mags in a Kimber?

The most popular will be Wilson Combat (either ETM or 47D), Chip McCormick, and Tripp Research.

There are a lot of magazine makers out there, the reputable ones are fine. Just make sure you don't end up with some cheap magazine copy bought at a gunshow.

I had constant problems with wilson and mcormick mags with my kimber. I ended up buying some surplus mags from the local surplus store for like 5 bucks each and have had zero problems.

Do you know of any places in LA where I could pick up some surplus mags to test out?

Wilson Combat, CMC, Kimpro tac. I have three of each. No issues so far.

I have no problems with my factory kimber mags it came with. They are 100% identical, even the markings as my Springfield 1911 mags. You should try them befor you just figure they are junk because someone online said so

I did however also buy some Kim pro tac mags (8 rnd and is kimber brand) and work fine too

It depends on the 1911. If you have a steel framed 1911 then my favorite by far - even over Wilson - is Chip McCormick's PowerMag. Wilsons are great magazines but their springs don't have the power of a PowerMag.

On the other hand if you have an aluminum alloy framed pistol you'll want a very good magazine with an anti-tilt follower like a Wilson. Never-ever skimp on magazines for your 1911. Cheap magazines are the Achilles heel of a 1911.
