    airsoft hobby

i was wondering if anyone out there has thought of taking up airsoft. recently i have had the idea of selling my "surplus" guns to fund an airsoft hobby. as it stands now i do not have time to go shooting as much as i would like, and if i do get a chance being able to shoot at people would make it so much more gratifying . since quality airsoft guns cost as much as the real deal it would mean that i would only be able to keep the essential HD guns, and let everything else go. although i have played with the idea of doing .22 tactical competition steel shooting, just to get over shooting at paper targets. anyone have advice on whether i should try out .22 steel shooting before switching to airsoft? or just go airsoft and not turn back. any advice would be great, thanks guys.

depends on what you want to get setup on? airsoft doesn't have to be super expensive.

Echo1 is a decent company to get AEGs from and their full metal line starts at $255 for an AR style gun. http://www.airsoftgi.com/product_inf...oducts_id=5674
      it is even STAG branded.

there is even now Magpul licensed airsoft guns now. although those start a bit higher due to it being Magpul.

I play airsoft quite often. It really is a lot of fun to play, just make sure there is some airsoft fields in the area. I have a g36c and a glock 17 gas powered pistol. They are a blast to play with. Go for it!

I'm going to take up airsoft for IPSC practice, as there are no action ranges close to San Jose. Don't know about the war games... just seems ridiculous to me. I can't get the image of that fat kid from the internet outta my head. Oh hell, if you don't know what I'm talking about here it is.

Airsoft? Go for it!!!! I got involved in the airsoft hobby back in 2004. Incredibly fun! But it gets very competitive when you start competing with a crew. I run with the Reservoir Dogs here in San Diego.
I'd recommend checking out www.airsoftextreme.com (Torrance, CA) for purchasing AEGs & accessories. Possibly www.airsplat.com if you aren't looking to get the best equipment.

For playtime, go to Hollywood Paintball. They have the actual movie set from Blackhawk Down on premises. Great for Mil-Sim games.

If you're serious about unloading your firearms, I'm highly interested in your Equinox
I've a Tokyo Marui HK G36Ke outfitted with all the bells & whistles. Let me know.

                Airsoft works like this.
"hey I see some bad guys 200 ft away and they see us. To bad we can't hit them from here."
"hey I shot you, you're dead"
                "no you didn't"
and yes you can spend as much on a fake plastic BB gun as a real gun.
Save the dough and shoot IDPA or 3 Gun. Unless you are 12 yrs old.

Hahaha, this is sadly the case with outdoor Airsoft games... I came from the hobby, and I can vouch that that ↑ was the reason why I sold all of my AEGs and have only kept a simple CO2 pistol for the rare CQB games that come along with old friends...

I would say that Airsoft is fun indoors, but outdoors it can be pretty sad at times especially knowing you can make that shot with even a real .22 =\

Why are you going to sell most of your guns? Why the need of buying an expensive air soft gun? Just go to Big 5 and buy a cheap 100 dollar gun and have fun! You don't have to go all decked out buying the top of the line gear, after all, its airsoft. Trust me, get a pistol and a cheap AK, go with some friends to some rural area where its safe and start blasting each other!

There's a HUGE performance difference between the "Big 5" guns and the ones that cost a lot more. It's mostly build materials, but for example plastic gears versus metal ones will up the reliability dramatically.

And the "rural area" idea is actually really frowned upon by responsible airsofters. The cops respond as if it's a real active shooter/firefight (as they should). I've had many run-ins with the police and had to field questions from local PDs about the guns when i worked for a retailer.

As to the OP, Tokyo Marui (TM) pistols have come quite a ways in the last few years. You should be happy with that choice. You also take a look at KSC/KWA and Western Arms pistols. KSC can accept Green Gas (hfc22) out of the box and most have metal slides which will produce a harder "kick". Western Arms are good at making 1911 style replicas, but will need some minor spring upgrades to be able to handle green gas effectively (they are designed for hfc134a).

Yea but i still have my cheap 20 dollar airsoft pistol i bought from Big 5 around 6 years ago and it still functions fine. I mean if you want to get competitive then i'd get an expensive but if you just want to have fun, i'd get cheaper ones.

Really? Thats pretty stupid, i didn't know that. Where i'd have airsoft wars was in my friends huge back yard, it was DAMN fun. And we all used cheap Big 5 guns. So i'd just get those if you just want to have fun, but i mean its your money not mine lol.

Get a good quality gas powered rifle and pistol, make a trap/target stand and practice in your garage. Heck, get some of the airsoft USPSA/IDPA/IPSC knockdown targets and set up your own short range versions of real courses. The neighbors will think you're going crazy with a nail gun (personal experience) but it's a good cheap way to practice when you can't make it out to the range.

Don't go into it whole hog, though. I did for a while and it's a very expensive habit.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!
