    Interest in Cardboard Target Stands?

So i'm curious... When you guys go out into the middle of nowhere to shoot stuff, what do you guys use for targets or target stands? When one is so far away from civilization and is practically surrounded by nothing, you have to shoot whatever you bring. Ideally, you pack it out in order to not trash the area.

Out in places like Tumey Hills and other BLM land, there can be some really trashed areas. I used to shoot stuff like cans and plastic jugs, but it tends to make a mess and is a hassle to clean up.

Due to this, my buddy has proposed to make me a few cardboard target stands. This way, all i have to do is put some cardboard together and when i'm done toss the entire thing in my trunk. Do others do this already?

He does cardboard design work for a living and knows how to make durable stuff out of cardboard. (He had a cardboard bed frame for months)
Would anybody be interested in cardboard stands if he offered them up to the community?

    Thanks!

I would for sure. Would be great for Burro private range shoots when setting up a tactical course.

How are "cardboard" target stands fastened to the ground so that they stand upright even on a windy day?
I use two metal stakes, pounded into the ground about two feet apart and tape an old pizza box or flattened cardboard to it with duct tape. Then I staple paper targets to it.
Everything comes home with me after shooting.

I go to home depot and buy dirt cheap 1x2's and make a quick and dirty frame. Just bring a drill and some extra screws and you can fix them in the field. I have a stand piece that holds them in place that I stake to the ground.

I use these. They work great as long as there isn't too much wind. $21 and from Amazon.com and eligible for free shipping if you have Amazon Prime.

I've seen people make their target frames out of PVC pipe. I might do that when I start going to Lytle Creek and just bring some sand bags to rest them on.

Can't really see how a cardboard frame would stand up in any kind of wind. I use $1 1x2's in a metal target stand.

Hmm, definitely some interesting thoughts here. I'll get back to yal with how he plans to affix them to the ground on a windy day.

I'm certainly not a hippy, but having something that is as biodegradable as possible would be ideal for a target stand b/c it's going to get cut to shreds.

I have a supply of 24"x24"x 1.5" cardboard boxes from work. Sort of like a family size pizza box, but heavier.

I built a frame from 3/4" PVC pipe I can slip the boxes over. For the base, I have two 4x4's about 2.5' long. I bored holes through the middle of each one using a 1" hole saw. This allows the vertical PVC legs to easily slip in, but the 4x4's are heavy enough to keep it from blowing over.

Instead of staples, I use 3M '77' spray adhesive to attach the targets. Fast, simple and very positive hold.

I use pushpins - reusable so no recurring costs. If I forget pushpins, I use empty .22 cases with the bullet end pinched shut into a chisel point. Poke small hole with knife, insert.

Not if you're hitting your target it won't.

                          PVC pipe
Get a set of the scissor type cutters and a bunch of elbows and tees
You can use surveyors stakes to keep the stand upright, just hammer the stake into the ground and slide the pipe over it or use a couple more tees on the bottom and use scraps of pipe to make feet
duct tape or cable ties will old the target/cardboard backings in place

Uline stocks a wide selection of Heavy Duty Edge Protectors. Order by 6 p.m. for same day shipping. Huge Catalog! Over 45,000 products in stock. 15 locations across USA, Canada and Mexico for fast delivery of Heavy Duty Edge Protectors.

Something like these work well for windy days. If you work in a warehouse environment (or receive palletized shipments) you can get your hands on them. I'm not sure if purchasing them straight out would be worth the cost, because it seems that wood and pvc are inexpensive. These are very strong, an while staking them into the ground might take some effort, they can definitely take a hammering (literally).

I make a frame out of 2x4s before I head out, then use drive rebar into the ground and zip tie them to the frame. You can shoot the hell out of the frame and it wont break like pvc and holds up well in the wind. I can post pics if needed.
