    AK opinion

I am in the market for an AK. I have seen numerous debates and have come away with comufornia having a limited choice. I have narrowed it to either the Romainian WASR or IO casar. I am looking for the classic AK with reliability, so although I have the $, I dont want a new SAIGA with holes drilled in it. In fact, no customization as I already own a S&W MP to do that to. Is the WASR and casar the only other options? Also, any recommended dealers, models or used AKs you got for sale? Im in the San Diego area.

Thanks Bob. The Turners near me has a WASR with double stack mag for $569. I had a Chinese Mac-90 (norinco) years ago but the wasr is hopefully of better quality.

        Nah, get a Vepr.

Out of all the Russian manufactors, Vepr is the best.

Unfortunately, the Chinese (Poly-Tech & Norinco) AKs were the best semi-auto AKs ever available to the US civilian market.

The WASR is decent, but not quite up to the quality of a Norinco.

VEPR...Ill look into that one. I went to Turners and looked at a WASR, and it seemed precisely what I was looking for. Even better, my favorite mom and pop gun shop-Duncans gunworks in San Marcos will be able to order one from LAN world in Utah. I noticed canted sights on most of the AKs, and can live with that. Ill give my gunsmith the business later to repair if need be.

DAS in Solana Beach has the WASR 10/63 for $529. They have other AK style firearms also.

Duncans will order an AK?!?! Wow! I haven't been in there for quite some time now apparently...

I have a VEPR and it is an awesome rifle but pricing is a bit on the high side. If you want to do it right the first time get the VEPR. If you don;t mind tinkering with rifle to get it to run reliabily and accurate (which might run you the price of a VEPR anyway) look at a Romy. I did it both ways and the VEPR cost me less in the long run.

Thanks guys! Yes, Duncans does his business with a place called LAN world in Utah, and Bill would be happy to order one. I called LAN world twice and both times they actually answered the phone. They seemed very helpful and willing to take the time with my questions. That said, he had WASR 10 double stacks CA ready, AND Polish underfolders which were in the process of being Californized. He has a website (google LAN World) and is Cali friendly. The site says out of stock, but he has the stuff. His # is 801-878-4880.
Now as far as me...In typical fashion, I spent WAY more than I wanted, BUT I went with an Arsenal SAIGA Warsaw from Turners. I know i said I didnt want a SAIGA convert, but seeing this gun sold me on it. My girlfriend is gonna kill me. I gotta go to Duncans tommorow....Turns out I have an old handgun that MIGHT be desirable, and may replace the grocery money I just spent

I got enough body fat that I could deal not eating for a few days, if it means AK.

Good choice on a Saiga--at least your gun will be brand spanking new. You won't be disappointed.
