Geez I think if your going to spend the money buying +P+ 38s you might as well just run 357 out of the darn thing

some people advocate shooting down powered 357's so you won't build up carbon rings that will catch on the magnum cases when ejecting empties...

also the longer mag cases put the bullet closer to the forcing cone. assuming you have the slightest interest in reloading.

to answer your question: yes I wouldn't carry 357 in a snubby, but rather a stout 38 load. You could lose your hearing shooting a magnum out of such a short barrel. I shot a 38 out of a 2.25" ruger once and I couldn't hear anything for a few minutes out of one ear.

Don't know how reliable the info is, but .357 is rated at 35,000 psi while the .38 +p+ is 22,000 psi. Standard .38 Special is rated at 18,000 psi. Based on that info, I would think it would be safe to use +p+ in a .357, though I don't know much about overpressure ammo.

This is the reason why i don't shoot .38's out of my .357 anymore, It is a pain in the rear to clean out the build up in the cylinder, i use to to it when i was a wheelgun noob. I don't know why people buy a .357 too shoot .38's out of. If you hand load you can just download .357 like i do and not worry about cleaning out all the gunk when you want to turn it up a notch.

Oh its safe I am just not sure why you would want to do it. I can understand running regular .38's out of one for plinking and practice but for any other purpose .357 is the way to go.

I go with the .38+p loads with my Model 60 J-Frame for practice. .357MAG is not real fun with this light frame, but the gun will handle it just fine so I keep it stoked with 'em around the house. Never thought of using .38+p+ or any other +p+.

If you had lead buildup in the barrel it had nothing to do with the cartridge case length. The shorter 38 special cases leave a carbon ring in the chambers of the 357 revolver.

You'd have fun shooting my magnaported 2.5" SP101 with full house .357 loads-- Beachball sized fireball out the front and 2 1.5 foot flames out of each port forming a "V".

I couldn't imagine touching that thing off without earplugs *and* earmuffs.

I thought the point of 38+p+ was so that police departments could avoid shooting criminals with "magnums". The Smith aluminum framed J frames in 38 cal were rated for +p after a certain date (but not +p+).

My Department actually mandates that we carry +p+ loads in our back up revolvers.
