My friend used to live in AZ, his dad bought a mini-14 off a guy for $200 around 15 years ago. He has no paperwork on it and wants to get it in his name. What has to happen?

Tranfer question

More info.
Who are we talking about for 'in his name'? Your friend, or his dad?
In what state dis the sale take place - AZ, CA, someplace else?
In what state did the seller live? In what state did Dad the buyer live?
Let's say Dad and seller both lived in AZ. I know nothing at all about AZ transfer laws, but neither does CA, so if Dad then moves to CA, CA will presume, as will I, that the transfer was legal.
Then, suppose Dad and family moved to CA. Bringing a long gun that is not what CA calls an 'assault weapon' when you move here is nothing CA cares about.
Now, suppose now-CA-Dad wants to give his rifle to his CA son. The process goes like this:
Dad: "Hi son - want a rifle?"
Son: "Sure!"
Dad: "Here you go."
Son: "Thanks, Dad."
Long guns are not registered. CA does not care about intrafamilial transfer of long guns.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page

Thanks for replying, the transfer took place in AZ, both Dad and seller lived in AZ at the time. Dad moved family to CA. My friend has the gun now and wants it in his name.
Since long guns are not registered he won't need to worry about putting the gun in his name?
The Mini-14 has a flash suppressor on it, I know it's felony set up like that, so just remove the suppressor and everything is good to go?Last edited by vf116; 07-11-2011, 11:56 AM.Comment

Right; unless he has a particular reason to get the rifle registered, he need not bother. If he actually wants to do that, there is a form he can send to the state with a fee - the Firearm Ownership Record, aka VOLREG.Thanks for replying, the transfer took place in AZ, both Dad and seller lived in AZ at the time. As to 'suppressor', that depends.
A flash-hider is a 'feature' in determining whether a rifle might be an 'assault weapon'. He needs to go through the flow chart - http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf - and see if that rifle might need some attention. I think of this as a 'mini-14':but there are other configurations, such asPractically speaking, the second is the same as the first, with a different stock, and the second one probably IS an 'assault weapon', while the first almost certainly is not.ARCHIVED Calguns Foundation Wiki here: http://web.archive.org/web/201908310...itle=Main_Page
