    Bench vise redux

I inherited an old, beat-to-death green bench vise from my father in law about a year ago. I brought it home and it sat, dejected, outside for most of that time. Since I need to set up an area to do work on rifles, I decided to refurbish the old vise for use. This thing is a behemoth.

Before: Ancient (and I'm sure lead-based) paint and rust coated most of the vise. Wire wheel and dremel used to clean it all up.

I hit the whole thing with Rustoleum black, then went back over it several times with urban tan and capuccino, as well as moreblack for shadowing.

Lowes carries cushioned inserts for your vise

I hadn't even thought about the jaw inserts yet, thanks!

            Nice job cleaning it up.

            That's actually a machinist's vice, not a bench vise.
And they're not cheap Nice score.

Thanks Redcliff, you're right. I should have known by the tight tolerances and the measurement marks around the rotating base. This thing was in nasty shape before. It was a good, quick project that I'll be able to use quite a bit.

Cool job! Hope your Wife appreciates the fact it now means something a bit more special. That will be a nice heirloom for your son, someday.
Actually I only started collecting Milsurps 3 years ago. I think I might own about 24...They're cheaper than guns that will most likely never get the opportunity to kill somebody...
