    Gun Sitting

A friend called me and said her 87 year old husband is now in a nursing home. She asked what she should do with his 2 handguns.

I told her to contact his son, who lives on the east coast and have them transferred to him. If the son wants them, it would be a while before he could come and get them.

Both guns were loaded and that made her nervous, so I told her how to unload them. She did so, without any problem. She said she didn't want them in her house, so I told her she could put them in my gun safe until she hears from the son.

Son can't just "pick them up"... they must be transferred through an FFL in the son's home state.

You can legally keep them for her for no more than 30 days. At that point, it becomes an illegal transfer

You would likely be fine if you do not have access, IE, you have a separate safe and only she knows the combination.
You can pick up a small ADG safe with an electronic lock that'll hold 4-6 guns and she can program her own combination and take the backup access key.
I would also write up a "no charge" storage contract that clarifies that this is temporary storage and not a "loan" or "transfer".

Whether that would clear you in court legally, I don't know, but if I were on the jury, I would certainly not vote to convict.

She doesn't think the son will want them. If that's the case, we'll go to an FFL and I'll buy them. Can't have too many guns.

I'll let you know if you'll need to volunteer for jury duty.

Oh, those silly and arbitrary laws that don't do absolutely anything strike again.

        Good luck, OP.

Somehow, I think the easiest way to get out of jury duty is to tell the judge "I really want to be on this case!" with big eyes!

On a similar note, someone told me that another strategy is to disclose that you are extremely racist and you hate ________(ethnic, cultural, religious, etc group).

I would assume it's just FUD, but it gave me a chuckle.
