    Brass Scarf Report 7-2-11

Was at the spot of preference by 0600. Takes about an hour to get there. I found the take to be worth the effort. Spent about 1 hour picking up brass prior to shooting.

Came back with 7 pounds of brass at a total of 598 cases I did not shoot.

223- 75 ea (Mostly Federal and Fiocchi)
38sp- 96 ea (Win and Fiocchi)
    9mm- 288 ea (90% Winchester)
    40s&w- 15 ea
    380 auto- 25 ea
    45acp- 72 ea (Federal)
    357mag- 22 ea
    300 WinMag- 3 ea
    308- 2 ea

    It's like an addiction.

Yup i am a brass whore... I ask if people next to me reload or collect brass... if they say no and say I can have it, I am all over the stuff..

Pisses off the RO's sometimes.. they say brass is their's once it hits ground, I tell them the guy said I could have it......so i go get it....

I am picking up brass in the desert, and mountain spots, so it's finders keepers.

On average I probably pick-up 3K cases a month. Out of those ~90% are in condition for reload. Saves me $$ plus makes me bend over 3K times a month.

For the rifle cartridges I do not have guns for, I throw in a coffee can. When full, sell the bulk.

This is likely stating the obvious but 9mm is the most common caliber laying on the ground for 2 reasons. Very popular caliber and some think it is not worth the effort to reload. When you shoot as much as I do saving $3.50 a box adds up.

Arent you worried about shooting unknown brass? I would imagine that 99% of it is once fired, but how do really know what your picking up?

I know there are ways to judge the age and condition of brass cases, but it would only take one bad one to ruin a gun (or your body). I suppose you could have an issue with factory new brass too, but at least you have recourse.

I hope you are picky about which ones you keep and which ones you discard. When you sell the extra, do you tell people you found them on the ground?

                Good questions-
Considering most shooters do not reload, brass on the ground is likely once fired as you said. You have to remember cases can be reloaded multiple times. If by chance I miss an obvious bad case such as dented and cracked, I will catch it in the press once I load.

IMHO, the reward far out weighs the risk in this method. I have been loading for years and the only thing I got to do is quit trying to shoot 380 auto our of my 9
Any yes, those who I sell to know where I am getting my brass. It's all good.

I pick up brass where ever I may find it. I don't reload so I'll get about $2.25/lb at the scrapper. Maybe next time I'll sell it here if I can get scrap price for it.

Don't do that! Sell it on Calguns. a) you'll get more. And b) keep it in the family.

Now that some people are using stainless media, even the brass that has turned black from ages outside can be saved, though it's not worth as much

Went shooting today. But first picked up about 150 223 cases and 50+ 30-30 cases at the firing line. I know it is all once fires as the PMC/Win boxes it was in was at the top of the garbage can. We have also picked up at least a half of a 5 gallon bucket of pistol(40/9mm/45/38sp) brass in the last couple of months. All were once fired.
A 30cal will reach out and touch them. A 50cal will kick their butt.
