You clean .22s? Man, I gotta dig my 10/22s outa the safe and look down the bore. I think I've had mine about 30 years and don't remember actually ever giving them a thorough cleaning. Lubing, yes, and I think a patch may have been down the bore a few times after taking someone out to shoot for their first time.
I think I should pay attention to this thread--I may learn something.People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

I clean my .22 rifles every trip to the mountain. Mistreat your dog and he'll bite you. Mistreat your wife and she'll leave you. To me weapon cleaning is part of a range trip. Take guns out, run a patch through the rifles (In case I left oil in the bore), go to the range, abuse some paper, come home and set up shop on the kitchen table. I generally leave a coating of oil in the barrel of the rifles as I do not shoot them as often (I occasionally do spontaneous trips down to the range with the pistols).Alot isn't a word and allot isn't the word you think it is.
I'd really like a Colt 1903 frame, bad finish okay!
I'm also looking for a good deal on a 1911 frame or two for budget/spare parts builds.Comment

Me too. Got the habit in the Army. I'll never change. To me weapon cleaning is part of a range trip. Im extemely maintenance oriented I usually clean my guns after every outing. Every one except my 22 I think ive cleaned it 3 times in the past 20 years, but oil it often. A good family friend told me you dont clean a 22 until you have to & ive followed his advice. The thing has never mis fired and performs flawlessly although I may just be lucky.Comment

Well....here's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I was ROBBED! Oh wait...wrong story
Seriously............ More than 10 THOUSAND rounds down a 10-22 and nar' more than a blast out from a can of Gun scrubber followed by a hose down of CLP....gun just kept on going and going and going and going. Sold 'er off to a friend who pretty much does the same thing.
Second 10-22 I take more care of and actually DO swab/brush the barrel from time to time (like every 3rd or 4th shoot).
.22's are awsome little guns for a VARIETY of reasons... thier ability to actually keep spewing lead with little cleaning is but one of those reasons!!!
But hey...DO clean your gun if you're not like some here that have guns to "play" with (i.e. read...Destroy for no reason). For me- .22's are cheap and easy to replace.........I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered....

2.)Why is it that if guns are sooooo unsafe that you're 9 times more likely to die at the hands of your doctor?
3.)Remember...Buy it cheap & stack it deep

I clean my 795 every 10k or so, so that's a long time. every 1k or so I clean the bolt face and the chamber so the casings don't stick upon extraction.
I remember the family had an older Remington bolt 22 that was never cleaned. I think the accuracy started to decline somewhere after 100k and decades of usage.
the danger of cleaning 22s to often is that the bore is so small, you can easily scratch the crown with a standard sized cleaning rod and forget to use a coated one.Originally posted by cvigueThis is not rocket surgery.Comment

You mean your supposed to clean those things
I occasionally clean the trigger and bolt face, but I don't think I've run anything down the barrel of my 10/22 except lead
The only .22 I've cleaned recently was a single shot bolt action which doesn't count because I was teaching my son how to clean a rifle
In any type of fight, & especially gun fights, there are no winners ..... just varying degrees of losers. The only fight you win is the one you never get into.
