a friend made a new barrel for his rifle. he cut it at 16.50 inches approx. the .5 was just to be safe... but the way the barrel fits into the receiver it looks like just a 15" barrel past the receiver. i am telling him he might run into trouble, as it looks like a 15" barrel. anybody know the laws on this?* where does the barrel begin, officially?

short barreled rifle?

The barrel length has nothing to do with how far past the reciever it protrudes. Tell him to make sure that it is longer than 26" OAL or he's going to run into the same legal trouble he would with a 6" barrel. Also, if it's a semi auto, centerfire rifle in Ca, it need to have an OAL of 30". In Ca, OAL is measured with stocks foled or at their shortest position where the gun will still fire.NRA Certified Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun and Metallic Cartridge Reloading Instructor
