target shooting in Tehama county ?

just looking for some info target shooting in Tehama County i found on BLM's website that target shooting was allowed on Spring Branch Road
Target shooting is generally allowed on public lands, however some areas are restricted because of safety concerns. You must provide your own paper targets and remove your debris when you leave. It is illegal to shoot at trees, signs, outbuildings, or other objects on public lands. Target shooters enjoy areas West of Swasey Drive (shotguns only) near Redding, 3 miles North of Keswick along Iron Mountain Road, and Spring Branch Road off of Jellys Ferry Road in Tehama County. The entire Sacramento River Bend Area is closed to target shooting with the exception of the Spring Branch Road site.

    http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/reddi...onhunting.html
but i just drove out there and BLM has a sign posted that it is a hunting area no target shooting allowed with a 150-1000 dollar fine
and not risking the fines to sight in and shoot a couple of .22's i turned around and headed back home 25 miles ....

so anywho the only range local is pvt that i know of so wondering if we have any other Tehama County folks here that might know someplace to target shoot local ?

Thanks for any info you all can give me..

I know where it is. Great place. Flat, gentle hills, looooong range. If you are in the right place, the sign says no shooting except in designated area. Just go up the dirt road a couple miles, you will see the area on your right. Bring a truck/SUV. I'm in Redding, I can show you where it is if you like.

i am looking for someplace to shoot mostly rimfire ( i store my other weapons on the mountain anyways most of the time) few hundred rounds ever few week ...

25-50 yards is fine just target shooting to get it out of my system...

i am used to being able to just step out on my deck in Trinity Co and just shoot all i want but with gas costs, work, and kids heading up there is getting farther and farther in between... been going threw withdraws down here ...lol

how is the area around Keswick ? i do get up to Redding a couple times a month to visit family, but have never shot up there and figured there has to be some public area to shoot down here

they shut off the shooting when they're moving cattle through or grazing them nearby. I ran into that a couple months ago. pissed me right off.

Interesting... last time I was out there shooting, there were cattle off to the side and out aways grazing. Keswick isn't bad, there are four areas to shoot. One is hilly, good for shooting clays but not much else. Can get crowded though, and of course there are your occasional dickheads out there. That's where I usually go though.

If that's all you need you can send me a message, you could shoot at my prop in Cottonwood.

So, I went out there last night to see what the status was, and here is what we have:

The big sign at the entrance:

This one, which makes it look like you aren't supposed to shoot out there:

This scary one, letting shooters know that IF they don't keep it clean, it WILL be closed (which kind of contradicts the sign above, saying that there is no shooting out there):

And now the pole clearly marking the designated shooting area:

And here is a larger view of the shooting area marked by the pole:

This site is most certainly open to shooting. I think that the "No Target Shooting" sign applies to the rest of the area (which is a HUGE area for hunting), the shooting area is an obvious designated area that is okay to use.

Hope this helps! Maybe we can get out there and clean up so they don't close it, it looked pretty nice last night though. Much cleaner than Keswick.

The road is a little rough, I drove a 7 series BMW out there to take those pics, so it isn't too bad. In winter, it's a different story.

ok so i got the scoop from the redding BLM office and the shooting area is open from a 1/2 after dawn to noon due to fire season, and they also apologized for the sign as i guess it has been causing alot of confusion as it is worded "very poorly" in there words and is meant that target shooting right there is prohibited as they where having issues of folks shooting right there off the main road

so woohoo i am going shooting this weekend ....lol
