Protecting my rifle from rust

I recently bought a Savage arms .22 plinker, and have been having problems keeping the blueing from getting rusted anywhere my fungers have touched, even with liberal amounts of oil. I live in Santa Cruz near the water, so the salt air probably does not help.

Are there any reccomendations to help keep my gun rust free?

get it reblued, parkerized, chromed or just a fabulous amount of CLP. I'd personally get it parkerized.

Also check your gun safe. Put some dehumidifier in there like Golden rod or rechargeable stuff. Move the safe to a drier location of the house....

What kind of oil are you using?

I spray that Eezox stuff on mine before putting it away and it works pretty good as a rust preventive. If you are using silica gel make sure it is properly "charged". If the beads are a light pink, its time to throw it in the oven to get it back to the right levels again.

Try to oil and store in one of those silicone impregnated "gun socks".

Don't walk away from it if it's got fingerprints. Wipe it down with an oiled rag.

JPW for rust prevention

During the summer months, a sweaty fingerprint can doom a blued finish. Some of the less expensive firearms (Savage, NEF, Marlin, Mossberg) have a less-than-polished exterior finish and their blueing can be pretty thin. Before putting these firearms back into the safe, I rub some Johnson's Paste Wax into surfaces of the barrel and receiver. For many years, this procedure has prevented rust from developing on my old and now "blue-less", mil-surp rifles. Just remember what your mom used to say, "Clean, clean, clean!!!".

I would not recommend this. I have seen many that glued themselves to the blueing after long term storage.

I just got a Browning .22, everytime I touch it I rub down the metal and put it in the safe w/o touching the receiver, barrel again. So far the bluing is fine; since you live by the coast you'll have to do more; try rubbing down all the parts with CLP or rub it down with a silicon gun cloth.
