Looking for a hard case with cut able foam to buy. Doesn't need to be a fancy brand just functional. I have looked at the Pelicans but man they are expensive... Anyone have a link to a site that sells multiple different brands? Or a suggestion? Thanks!

Thoughts on which hard case to buy?
Tags: None -
What is the primary intended purpose of the hardcase? For flying we used to use these Kalispel aluminum cases. Tough but heavy. The Pelicans are nice but bulky in rifle sizes. For just going to/from ranges I'd think any of the regular plastic cases will do and probably offer slightly better transportation protection than the soft cases/sleeves.Comment

Whatever you do DO NOT buy SKB, they are now made in China. They want you to think they are American but that all changed a year ago. Cheap cases with a huge price tag!

Please Buy Pelican, they are 100% Made in the USA and they are 100% Californian.
Pelican is the #1 case in the USA, now with NATO certification."Apparently the kids at the 4-H club that raised my turkey must have fed this bastard snickers bars, muscle milk and, presumably, smaller turkeys." - Tom MylanComment

They will be used just for transportation, no flying, shipping etc. I really like the Pelicans so I will keep an eye out or them going on sale.Comment

Are you in a car or SUV? If yes, and you're just talking about transporting from the house to the vehicle, from the vehicle to the firing line, then back from the firing line to the vehicle, and the vehicle to the house, then get a soft case or a really thin/light hard case.
I've got a couple 60" Starlight cases and while they are rugged as can be, I never use them for regular range trips. Too heavy and too bulky. Even the Assault Weapons go into soft cases with the zipper handles locked for the 'locked container' requirement:
My heavy bolt guns? Soft cases. I carry my Savage 10FP in a McMillan/Blackhawk rifle case that came free with my McMillan A-5 stock (see background of photo):

But if you're putting your firearms/gear in the bed of a truck with hard lining, then I would recommend getting the Pelican or Starlight and keeping the rifle in a soft case stored in the Pelican/Starlight so the rifle doesn't get banged around by your other gear.

I transport them in my SUV but I also have to store them at my home. I don't have a safe yet (still live at home, waiting for house prices to drop a little more). Because of this my parents requested all my firearms be locked in hard cases... I would much rather prefer a soft bag, a lot easier to store!Comment

Pelican or Storm
They happen to be a local company but their prices are very good. Service is excellent too. Lots of other cool stuff too, great stocking stuffers for Christmas!

I've used Pelican, Tundra (now Underwater Kinetics), Storm and various bags for my photo equipment (my profession.) I have Pelican and Tundra cases that are over 20 years old and still fully functional. Look decent too. The newer Storm cases are a favorite now. I prefer their latches. Some on the earlier Pelican and Tundra cases were finger-breakers, the kind you pry open with a screwdriver! Newer latches are much more gentle, no problem now. The O-ring weather sealing actually works. Close the case in the mountains and then try to open in the valley later! Must use air release.
With these cases, you pay more to get far better protection. It's worth the money to do it right the first time.NRA Certified Instructor: Basic Pistol ShootingComment

I'd suggest getting a gun cabinet if they just want you to store them locked. You don't need to get a safe, but you can get a "locker" type cabinet to store them. They usually just have a couple of keys that you use to open it and weigh a lot less than a safe does. They will cost about as much as a large Pelican case does and you can store about 10 rifles in them.
