wife's perspective on what firearm to grab if I'm not home she needs to leave home

I'm not trying to start a what is best for the end of the world discussion.

I'm a newly-wed. Wife and I are getting our new lives together as there are many little things to settle (a good problem). Recently, we talked about if I'm not home what firearm should she take from the safe if some sort of disaster strike and shelter in place is not an option. Her rational was completely different than mine. Her end choices don't matter for this conversation.

Basically, she envisions that the firearm for self defense is only one of many things she needs to get out of the home (future children, pets, other important documents, keepsakes you want on hand, etc). In terms of a firearm for self defense, with her hands full of other things she doesn't want something bulky or heavy to deal with. Also, she knows which are loaded and which aren't. She won't have the time to go grab ammo elsehwere (or easily figure out which ammo for what) so, she will only grab something she knows I keep loaded.

It's a different mindset and reasoning than mine and her choice is different than mine would have been. I don't worry about it as I'm of the mindset that I'm weapon and I can use any firearm that I own to defend myself. My approach is to keep things as simple as possible. If she feels there is a threat great enough for her to want to leave she will be stressed and I'm totally fine on whatever she gets as long as it has ammo.

If you haven't had this conversation with your wife, I suggest you have it. It was interesting. The actual weapon itself is a moot point.

PS Yes, we have food in car, copies of critical documents, and have discussed likely scenarios of what she would do if something happens should I not be able to reach her. Shelter in place if possible, depending on disaster where she would likely go, etc. I married well and she is more than capable of taking care of herself and the family. In fact, she is a much better shot than I am. Her country upbringing (vs my city) has done her well.
I think Thor's hammer was an 45-70 lever action loaded with Garrett cartridges.

I find that 90% of the questions asked here have been answered 20 or more years ago by Jeff in hid Gargantuan Gunsite Gossip books.

since we're hoping to relocate, we have very consolidated ammo constraints, so she really has only 2 options and that depends on where in the apt she is located - she is comfortable and proficient with both.

We do not have children yet, otherwise I'd imagine my approach to protection measures would be significantly different

If my life is in danger, idk how important grabbing documetns and keepsakes are at this time. If its something like a fire or earthquake, etc yea but if some thug comes in and has every purpose of hurting my family or myself, i'm going to get them safe and defend them.

I had a scary situation happen not too long ago.
We were notified by our complex owners that a termite inspector would be entering our unit on a certain day. Well, on that day, I packed everything up and locked it away. My wife stayed home a little late from work in an attempt to be home while the inspector was around. I came home from work shortly after and assumed the inspector had come and gone as planned, and maybe we had just missed him. So, naturally I unpacked my stuff and put things back where I like to keep them.

One week later, my wife informed me that she just had a run-in with the termite inspector. She was coming out of the shower when she heard someone in our living room. She asked, "Hello?!" and got a reply.. She ran for her LCP and locked herself in the bedroom, and asked him to leave. He was let in by the owners. They were a week late...

This, although creepy, is a slight sigh of relief. My biggest fear is/was that my wife would either freeze, or not know what to do if someone was in our place or intended on inflicting harm. The fact that her reaction was to get to a firearm and lock herself in the bedroom was great.

if you guys already have a bag in her car and she already knows what gun she will take maybe you could put a couple of boxes of ammo in there for her ,so long as she grabs the right gun.
