My question is - Why a bolt gun and not a semi-auto with a rolling bolt like the Mini or the old Deerfield rifle? I think that a .357 semi-auto carbine would be very cool, and practical, being chambered in a common handgun caliber.

I wonder what the management at Ruger is thinking these days.
Once again: If I'm going to carry something the size and weight of a rifle, I want a the power of a rifle cartridge.
If this was $200-300 it might be a cool toy. At this price I'd go ahead and buy a lever action.
How about they update their .44 semi-auto carbine and add .357 to that instead?People don't like to be meddled with. We tell them what to do, what to think, don't run, don't walk. We're in their homes and in their heads and we haven't the right. We're meddlesome.

To me, this falls under the category of "just because you can, doesn't mean you should". A bolt action .357 Mag? Or a .44 Rem Mag? Might make a great collectable some day but doesn't seem very useful or desirable to me.NRA Life Member

5.5 pounds...
a bolt gun..
will feed anything from sub-sonic 148 gr wadcutters (presumably)..
to 200 gr thumpers...
enough barrel to make velocity interesting...
don't have to worry about finicky lever actions...
light...
and relatively short...18 in barrel... so velocity matters a bit...
and it will feed most anything one presumes...
and wadcutters could be almost silent in my backyard... and if my backyard was like in Nevada... easy silent...
and full diameter...
and if I hunted deer/pigs at short ranges in heavy cover.. like with hogs.. and I needed something quick and light and easier to shoot that an handgun...and did I mention heavy bullets and velocity?
so .. in the right application.. .to the right person... it could be like katnip ...
for me..though it's the marlin 1984 sbl in 44 mag what sharpens my claws...Greebo, as a matter of feline pride, would attempt to fight or rape absolutely anything, up to and including a four-horse logging wagon. Ferocious dogs would whine and hide under the stairs when Greebo sauntered down the street. Foxes Kept away from the village. Wolves made a detour. Terry PratchettComment

Ok, I'm a huge Ruger fanboy...I currently own five Rugers including the 10-22, SP101, GP101, Blackhawk in 6 1/2", and M77 in 30-06. My biggest ever mistake in firearms selling/trading I consider to be selling my old M77 in .270.
WHY!? A .357 bolt gun? Put it in the semi auto group and I can see it...the .44 mag is there. Why not the .357? But a bolt gun? I just don't see it. I wouldn't buy it over the lever guns offered in that caliber.Comment

I think it would be kinda interesting if they chambered it in something like .460S&W"Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms." James Madison
