    Shooting On BLM Land

I've read a number of threads where this has been mentioned. We don't have BLM land in Florida, but it sounds like this is a pretty good thing for people in western states. So what is the deal? Are there designated areas for shooting that are open to all ie if I visit CA can I shoot on BLM land there? Is it like a real range with a rangemaster, or is it self-monitored? Thanks for any details guys.

Shooting on BLM land is total legal. Just a few laws you need to know. Like no shooting within 250 yards from a home and road way. Make sure you have a safe backstop. And check out the area first, there my be a hunter or two already there. Just remember, the land belongs to all Americans, so treat it with respect and police your trash.

No its not like a "real" range, its public land that is designated for certain uses. Some places can be down right dangerous because it is not regulated, people shooting while others are down range, people shooting at rocks and metal trash they bring out there.

So think of it more as a section of public land (forest or open land) that is outside of city limits and is unincorporated so its legal to fire firearms on. Also note some BLM is not open to shooting, some is limited to hunting, and some areas limit the type of firearms usable there (generally shotgun only areas)

This. Make sure you contact the local office to find out what areas are closed for shooting.

Anyone can shoot on BLM its public land.I perfer to shoot on BLM you can shoot at your own pace and dont have to stop every 15 minutes. The closest BLM is an hour away so I usually go with a couple of buddies take some food and make a day of it. Sucks Florida doesnt have any BLM land.

No, plenty of government land (national parks and forests, state parks and forests, etc), but I don't think any of it is BLM land. There are some areas of state land where you can shoot - closest one to me is about 75 miles away, but I usually shoot at one of two ranges (one outdoor, one indoor) that are a lot closer. The state land does have up to 300 yard ranges which is nice when I want to shoot my FNAR at longer distances off a rest. Usually I just shoot my ARs and AKs unsupported with iron sights to test my zombie accuracy at 100 yards, and I can do that at the outdoor range closer to my house. I got to confess completely unsupervised shooting does make me nervous as there are always guys like one of the above posters described.

75 miles is ok for a day shooting. hell many in CA drive that to work everyday.

                      @ccmc
Without access to BLM I would have to leave this (un)holy land many years ago.
Shooting is practically unrestricted on BLM land. There might be some local restrictions though.
In a case you are interested in visiting California Commiefornia, I can give you directions to my "private" shooting spot which I've been using for almost 20 years. (This spot is even very well visible on Google satellite images......no wonder, after so many years of usage).
                      (Here comes the teaser):

                      Selected features:
                      1. Overall location

                      2. Selected ranges. From 50 yards....

                      3. ........to infinity.

                      4. Plenty of beautiful women

No, no, no...it's not an e(vil)bay. You DO NOT get, what you see.

                              BTW
Yes, in California Commiefornia the guns really grow on utility polls.

Seriously, just PM me about location if you're planning on vacationing in here.
Maybe we could go and shoot together.

                              To the "local" guys.
I consider the place depicted above as my "private spot", and intend to keep it that way. However nice people and good shoters are ALWAYS welcomed!
Spent last weekend over there. Was a little bit too hot for comfort though.

                              PS
                              Sorry for hijacking the thread.
