    Old school Smith Wesson Quiz..

I got this old 29 from a cal gunner awhile back, when I took it apart I found this little rod inside the rebound slide spring? DO you know why they put it in there?

Out of ALL the Smith`s I`ve had this is the only one that I`ve found with this rod. Very very old school smithing trick can you guess?

Dunno, I'm looking at a parts diagram for 29 right now and i don't see anything diffrent. Doesnt seem to mention anything in the Kuhnhausen S&W manual.

It's a trigger stop and is in all model 29 variants. It's in the Kuhnhausen book if you read the section about removing and reinstalling the rebound slide.

Tells you how to remove it but thats about it.

Shows it in the factory diagrams as being their. I think you need to spill the beans.

All Smiths I have ever taken apart have this pin, called a trigger lever which has an "eye" on the trigger end where a pin goes thru it to hold it in the trigger; (it's not a trigger stop which attaches inside the frame with a screw, right behind the trigger and can be seen protruding into the trigger guard at the upper back of trigger).
The lever is allowed to pivot so it can be inserted into the spring as the trigger assembly is installed. Look for evidence that the "eye" has broken off for it to be loose from the trigger.

First - how's it feel to be the first guy in about 20 years to clean the inside of that gun?

Anyway, that little rod is the trigger overtravel and it is common on many, but not all, S & Ws. I take apart all my Smiths and it's about 30/70 having them, noticed most of them are N frames. Whether someone else has taken the gun apart before me or not & lost it - I'm not certain.

Very simple way of working - when the trigger is pressed to the rear the rod limits overtravel by butting up against the pin that holds the rebound slide & spring in place.

P.S. I can see in your picture that the lever is missing from your trigger. It's only $2.96 from www.Brownells.com
I can also see the trigger slot in your frame is empty so your trigger stop and tiny screw are also missing. Here's the exact page for schematic and parts list for a 29-3: http://www.brownells.com/aspx/ns/sch...=N-Frame+29-3+

Sorry it took so long to get back, It is a over travel rod, I was told by a old gunsmith friend of mine (Tussey) that they use to put them in when they did a trigger job I wasn`t aware they were in so many guns like I said i`ve hardy ever seen them,Common back then to remove the hammer safety levar ? not sure of the name but this 29 didn`t have one either. I took it appart due to the fact that the gun wouldn`t allways lock when cocking it, I found the spring to be bent and week so I have to order a new one...

I just ordered parts from S&W, 1-800-331-0852 (8am to 8pm eastern time) and got them in three days. Brownell's didn't have what I needed this time. But I used the schematic at the link to Brownell's website (in my post above) to talk from while I had Smith on the phone. I'd replace the trigger lever too if I were you, to keep the spring from binding because it acts like a spring guide.

That sort of dog leg shaped item is the hammer block and yes, often some folks did remove them. Smiths didn't always have them (my 1917 & 2nd Model HE don't have them, not sure when they were intro'd) and some of the old timers viewed it as not needed. I've never found them to get in the way or degrade the trigger pull or function.

When re-assembling I've always put the block in the high position - makes it easier to line up the recess in the sideplate.
