I'm thinking about building a "retro" AR (muzzle brake content)

are the 3 prong muzzle brakes legal in CA? I don't want a "vacation" at Club Fed over an eight dollar part.

OP, I suggest looking to the manufacturer of the part to see if they consider it a "flash hider" or a "muzzle break". You're thinking of a featureless build? If the manufacturer considers it a "muzzle break" I believe you're good to go. If the manufacturer considers it a "flash hider" you are not good to go. If it's a flash hidder you will need a bullet button and a 10 round magazine.

This is a legit question not a n00b who didn't do his HW.

I think there is a bit of confusion going on here...

You would not get "a vacation at Club Fed", for a California law.
A full on M-16 can be legal in most free states, even with the prancing Colt, and happy switch. So no issue Federally with what you are asking about.

Do a search or two, this topic has been discussed several times including flat sided, triangle hand guards, etc.

Since the OP was asking about a "muzzle brake" and not a "flash hider" it would not matter. At that is what the famous AW Flowchart shows.

This is what I was talking about:

I was doing a featured build with a BB, PG, 10rnd mags.

I just love the retro AR with triangle handguards & all that.

Sorry for not doing a search. It was just me being lazy

It is the original suppressor Armalite style used.

reminds me of a vortex FH and I don't believe it is a brake even though it is called one.

i am aware of the 3 prong flash suppressor i got one on my RAW

just never heard of a brake version

to me a brake seems to do one thing deflect in one direction or plane intending to either reduce muzzle rise or recoil

I wanna say it was Sarco that makes Retro Triangle Hangards that will fit M4's. Plus Ironwood makes Retro Triangles in wood.
