tell me how to legally dispose a defective rifle...

hello, to make a long story short...

i need help in legally and properly disposing a rifle that isn't safe anymore. how do i do this?

but anyway, what happened was i bought a Remington Model 5 .22LR bolt action rifle in 2010. it was a great rifle, but the firing pin broke. i went and replaced the firing pin from the manufacturer, but now the rifle doesn't function the way it did with the ammo i was using previously.

i used brick Federal .22LR ammo and that fed well. but when i used Wolf Match Target, i would pull the trigger and nothing would shoot!? the MOST DANGEROUS situation i had was when i tried Winchester's new non-lead .22 LR on this rifle. i would push the bolt forward and the RIFLE WOULD FIRE WITHOUT ME PULLING THE TRIGGER!?!?!?

anyway, this rifle is not worth reselling, it's much too dangerous for me to sell it used, especially since it fires WITHOUT PULLING THE TRIGGER. i need a way to properly dispose of this rifle like it never existed. I would hate to sell it to someone and to hear later that there was a horrible accident with this rifle. i'm also apprehensive of even trying to fix this rifle because if it failed in the past, it'll fail again in the future when you least expect it!!! help me get rid of this thing.

Why not give it to me or someone who can fix it?

Destroying a whole gun that is fixable i think violates some sort of maral law somewhere.

Send it to Remington and let them fix it.

I see you are located in Nor Cal.

Have you tried J&G Gunsmith's in Granite Bay? They are extremely competent gunsmiths and might be able to fix it.

Sounds like a headspace issue. I'm assuming that gun has a fixed firing pin. Fixed firing pins must be properly calibrated to the chamber. A gunsmith could probably take care of this for you for around $150-$200, or you could do it yourself with a book and some tools.

heh heh...the rifle itself cost $250...i don't know if i want to spend $150-200 to get it fixed! thanks for the suggestion though.

                maybe i should've just bought a Ruger 10/22 for my first .22LR???

yes the 10/22's are simple lil critters, the striker-fired bolt actions are a bit more to adjust and make right

Many people here would be willing to take it off your hands and fix it. But, if you really don't want to sell it to someone to repair and use, send it to Numrich, they will send you cash back for it based on it's value as a parts gun.

Check with Remington for their closest warranty/repair shop, (IIRC in SoCal it's Bain & Davis in San Gabriel. They may cover all of CA ), and get a proper estimate that's not based on an assumption. It could be something as simple as a mistake in reassembly.

I had this exact problem with an old western auto bolt action 22 mag rifle my dad gave me and what you are describing is exactly what was happening to mine. there is a type of spring that returns the trigger to the forward position and when it gets weak it either doesnt fully return the trigger when the bolt is slid forward or it returns the trigger but any little movement will set it off. I got the parts from numrich http://www.gunpartscorp.com/ and fixed the rifle myself.

Here is the listing for your rifle with a schematic and all parts, you could rebuild just about the whole section giving you problems for less then transfer fee's.

Numrich Gun Parts Corporation, America's leading supplier of current and obsolete gun parts, accessories, and military surplus since 1950.

also dont know if you have googled the problem yet but i always find it helpful because with gun problems there are very rarely isolated incidents.

Wipe the finger prints off of it, wrap it in a blanket, put it in your trunk, drive it to a secluded bridge in the middle of the night, and throw it in the lake. Dump the body elsewhere.

Sorry to hear your bummer experience with this. You could also hunt down a gun buy-back and get a $50 gift card to somewhere, but you'd make a bunch of gun lovers very upset by doing so.

Wait for the police buy back program to start and get $50? Put the $50 toward another rifle
