    Handgun shipping question

Friend just called me. He is traveling across the southwest. He stayed the night in a town in New Mexico, checked out today and drove all the way to northwestern Arizona. He gets in his room and noticed that his duffel bag that had his handgun in a soft case was open and that his case wasn't in there

He called the hotel in NM and they found the case, and have it secured.

He asked me what/if their is a proper way to have the hotel ship it back to his work, or place of business, or to an ffl in our hometown.

I was thinking if it was me, I would just drive back and get it, but I've never shipped a firearm before so thought i'd ask and see if that'd be an easier route for him.

UPS, from a shipping center, not one of the local stores.

Since there's no transfer of ownership, sending it directly to him is legal, but UPS employees may not know that, and I wouldn't expect a hotel to know it or fight for it.

So, UPS to an FFL might be needed - check with the receiving FFL first.

Non-FFL cannot ship handguns USPS. Might wind up having NM FFL ship it to CA?-FFL, worst case.

would that mean that one of the hotel staff would have to take it to a shipping center? or could he call ups and set up a pick up?

Also, he wouldn't be back to Sac till Fri/Sat. would it be fine if someone else signed for it at our work?

If all else fails, like I told him. It'd be a 10hr detour

If it crosses state lines - it has to be delivered to an FFL. In this scenario it might be easier to just drive back.

The only time it would be able to go back directly to him across state lines would be if the hotel was an FFL and the firearm was a repair.

          Actually, no.

For example, it's entirely legal to mail your hunting weapons to yourself in a different state, so long as the owner is the one who opens the package. No FFL required.
Q: May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.
Same thing applies here. The issue is no TRANSFER may occur interstate without 'benefit of FFL'; since the person already is the legal owner, that isn't a concern.

            Ooops. Forgot about that.

The issue here is still who does the packaging and who does the opening. If it isn't the same person, that to me does not seem lawful.
