FFL holders, I need your input

I recently bought a shotgun off a friend who ended up with it after his uncle died. My friend's GF doesn't want firearms in the house, so I bought it off of him. Since I don't know the history of the shotgun, I asked a sheriff friend of mine to run the serial #, and he said there was no record of it existing in CA. Now, I know that I need to get this officially transferred into my name through an FFL, but do I need to go in with the friend I bought it from, or can I just go myself since the shotgun technically doesn't exist? According to my sheriff friend, it needs to go through an FFL because all firearms in CA need to be registered. What do you guys advise?

Well, long guns in CA are not "registered", but you do have to transfer through an FFL. You both need to be there to do the transfer

Not an FFL question, a general firarms law question.

You and your friend need to go to an FFL and do a Private Party Transfer - PPT.

Once that is complete, CA still will not have a record - long gun info is not put in the database, nor is it reported so it could be entered.

Frozen in 2015, it is falling out of date and I can no longer edit the content. But much of it is still good!

If it is a 50 yr old shot gun then you can take home with a handshake. If not then a FFL is needed.
