Guns dangerous in the home?

I brought my son to his doctor today and they have a big sign on the wall saying that guns are dangerous in the home. The sign had a statistic that said for every one time that a gun is used to deter an intruder there are 43 cases where someone, used a gun to commit suicide, or had an accidental shooting in the house, or a gun was used to kill a family member. They even ask if you have guns in the home on a questionaire they ask you to fill out.

What do you guys think of that statistic? Personaly I think it would be irresponsible for me not to have a firearm to defend my family if there was ever a need.

Those stats were cooked up by the Brady Campaign. They're total B.S. My Doc does NOT ask if there are guns in my house, if he did, I'd find another Doc, as you should.

As for the doctor’s office, I'd go somewhere else and I'd also make sure he knew why I was taking my business elsewhere.

Guns in the home are dangerous only if you let them be. If you are a responsible gun owner, they should never be a danger in the home. They can be a danger just like any other "tool" in and around your home if you are not careful.

Next time ask your doctor how many people die from cars. I don't put to much residence on statistics. No one is alike, we are all different in how we live our daily lives, so you can not put a statistic on what can happen to us. Each incident has to be looked at individually and usually people get hurt due to stupidity.

First, find a pro 2A doctor. Second, realize that even if those "facts" are correct, they don't take into account that some suicides are probably for the best. I've watched a few close friends and/or family members needlessly suffer in their last few weeks of life. Nor do they take into account that using a firearm to defend one's self against a family member isn't always a bad thing to do. In fact, I wish more battered/abused spouses and children could see past the fact that a family member is/was hurting them and take whatever means required to stop the abuse. That said, I also bet that the Bradys completely made up their stats in the first place.

This "statistics" comes from the many times debunked Kellerman study. Basically, Mr. Kellerman did a lot of hard tweaking to arrive at it. However, despite having been debunked on multiple occasions, and despite the conclusions of this study making little sense, the antis clutch to it for the lack of anything better. Besides, a good lie shouldn't just die just because it's a lie, right?
