It is up to the parents to the type of securing they have for home guns. Yes it is very sad for the people involved but it will not change the way I secure my guns. I would rather have my 16 year old be able to defend her self and still keep the toddlers from my guns. Maybe if they would allow people to openly talk about guns then the word would get out and this would not happen. Or you can buy everyone a $100 gun box if it makes you feel better.

I would say that as the children get older the kind of safety should change. I dont think that a 2 year old could rak my 45, so i will not keep a round in the chamber. That will also be safer for all, since i consider it for self defence.

Since when is a gun safe a requirement to have a secured firearm? Ever heard of a holster? If you have your firearm holstered, your 2 year old isn't getting it.

Put it in your already existing cabinet that a 2 year old can't get into? Instead now we would need the government to decide what qualifies as a locked container that a 2 year old can't get into.

How about you just accept that the parents were failures, instead of trying to place the burden on everyone else? Additionally, your "felony failure to secure a firearm" now puts the burden on the gun owner of what happens if someone breaks into their home, cuts a safe open, steals their gun and then uses it to murder someone. All because it obviously wasn't "secure enough". Go take your liberal police/nanny/bigbrother-state BS elsewhere. You sound like a Brady asking for common sense gun laws.

My .02, I didn't hear the OP argue for any further laws etc., just the simple critique of those who assume safety just because they had a chat with their kids. It doesn't seem like a dupe or necessarily sticking to the quoted case. The actual suggestion that sixteen year old kids are unpredictable is spot on. I'll just share that I might not be here today if my Step Father had not locked up his firearms in a secure cabinet. The OP is right on that teens get drunk, stupid, and hormonally wierd...

There were LOADED guns all around my house. My house was an open house. All the kids in the neighborhood played at my house. My best friend Todd's dad kept his 12 ga LOADED in a rifle rack in the back of his truck...without a drivers side window.

There were over a dozen kids on my street. All ages. The lack of laws is NOT the problem. The lack of gun locks & safes is NOT the problem.
