    Black Powder Guns

Hey guys, I have two questions:
    1. Where is a good site to buy black powder rifles/revolvers from?
    2. My friend is an international student, is he allowed to purchase black powder firearms?
    Thanks!

    1. Dixie Gunworks
    2. Don't know
I'm only smiling at you while you talk to me because it's hilarious that you really think I give a crap about you.

As I've gotten older I thought I was gaining patience, then I realized I simply don't give a crap.

You can walk into a gun store and buy a muzzle loader with cash, no id, and walk out. I suppose if you look young enough, they might want to see ID as proof of age.

You can also buy ammo and cleaning supplies, the whole kit and caboodle, for cash, no ID required.

And for the revolvers with conversion cylinders, you can buy the conversion cylinders and their cartridges for cash, no questions asked.

Remember, there are black powder cartridge revolvers and rifles which follow normal handgun and long gun rules. The relaxation applies to muzzle loaders only, and yes, black powder revolvers count as muzzle loaders because they load from the front of the cylinder.

Thanks for the reply, he's turning 21 soon so I'm considering buying a black powder revolver for his birthday.

Warning -- revolvers are by far the filthiest black powder guns you can get. It takes me half an hour to clean them -- remove the wood grips and the brass trigger guard, remove the cylinder, remove all nipples, dunk everything but the wood in hot soapy water, break out the toothbrush and pipe cleaners in addition to the usual brushes and patches, have compressed air handy for drying out nipples and inner workings, be absolutely religiously fanatical about oiling things up afterwards .... I am sure that if I had everything ready, if I were cleaning multiple black powder guns often enough to have all equipment right at hand, I could cut the time down, but I doubt I will ever be able to clean a revolver in less than 15 minutes. They are really really dirty guns.

They are fun too ... but I don't shoot them as often as I would if I could just pass them on to Jeeves for cleaning.

But they are allot of fun, i used a rolled up Fleece jacket as a pistol rest and it caught fire! it was awesome, I've always wanted one but I've been too busy buying CF guns. Cabela's has allot of BP guns online.

I read somewhere that once you load the powder, bullet and primer it is now considered a FA (I hope I'm wrong). For you friend to be on the safe side tell him to get a hunting license. As long as your friend does not have any restrictions he's good to go.

I believe Turner's sell them over the counter if they have it in stock. Most shooters will tell you to avoid brass frame and go for the steel frame. I don't shoot that much so I went ahead with the brass frame from Midway. It was made by Pietta for CVA and got it for $85.00 for the 1851 Navy Octagonal barrel. For that price I should have gotten a 1858 too. Most season shooter's will also tell you to buy Uberti instead of Pietta.

I could be wrong but i heard all those Italian replicas are made by the same company.

If you mean the 1873 Single Action Army, that is a black powder cartridge gun and probably doesn't get near as dirty as the muzzle loaders. I know my Remington 1858 is much easier to clean with the conversion cylinder, mainly because no nipples to take so much time and no grease in each chamber to blow all over the frame.

And if you mean a muzzle loader, the only thing that really sucks with them is that you don't want to just load it once and fire, that is too little pleasure for all the cleaning pain. You want to load and fire and load and fire ... I'd say it takes at least 5 full cylinders to be worth the cleaning, half an hour for half an hour. Nothing wrong with making it 10 cylinders worth!

honestly, the easiest way to clean a black powder revolver is to put it in the dishwasher...

(for cheap replicas. i wouldn't do it to anything valueable)

That's an interesting idea. Do you still take the nipples off? I guess you have to take off at least the wooden grips, how about the trigger guard? How much disassembly?

Dang, I'm starting to look at BP revolvers now. I like that Remington '58 SS with adjustable sights. looks pretty sweet.
