best barrel length and twist rate for 5.56 or .223 rifle

which is better, ford or chevy
blondes or redheads
you get the idea.
my preference is 20" chrome-lined 1/7 twist. others will disagree, but nothing else has such a wide range of ammo choices, and shorter barrels lose velicity for what I consider an insignificant increase in "handiness.".

20" for service rifle or longer range use (beyond 300 consistent).
16" and below for close quarters or lightweight/carbine manuverability.
1 in 7" and 1 in 8" for beyond 70gr bullets. 1 in 9" is optimal for 55 and 62.

5.56 NATO ammo should not be used in barrels chambered for .223 Remington or some other .223 'match' type chambering.
Read ammo-oracle.com for more information.
A 5.56 chamber will allow you to shoot military spec and commercial ammo safely. So this is the best chambering for the all around AR (ie: SHTF, combat, tactical use, etc).
Service rifle shooters will want a tighter chamber for competition use. Thus, most people will get a barrel chambered in something like .223 Wylde or some other .223 'match' chamber.Last edited by ocabj; 01-18-2006, 3:04 PM.

If 1/9 is optimal for 62gr, why does the Military issue 1/7 for the ammo?
