An AR pistol without the mag lock would be a great CQB item with light weight loadings (varmint grenades etc.)

Op, if it's going to be your only AR go with the carbine. Once you already have an AR carbine then go with the AR pistol.
You get what you pay for. For those that take the cheap side what you said is very true. People shouldn't cut corners and expect great guns.
