I keep one Shotshell chambered and 8, 185Gr Speer gold dot HP under it in a 1911. I'm thinking that the shotshell will hurt and startle an intruder enough to make him think he is dying. Instead of actually killing the SOB. And if I aim alittle high, the shotshell will blind him. If I happened to shoot low. Making him a unic, Or If he was running away, A shotshell in the A*s may make him think twice before entering someone else's home. Even though he is in my house unnanounced. I don't want to rob him of his life. But in this situation, I have to think about my life. Would it be better for me legally if the intruder was dead or simply wounded and went to hospital to have the shot removed from his butt? Or other sensitive places?

In the house, fear for your life or family, use deadly force, IMO, No ifs or buts.

You're not allowed to fire unless you are in fear of your life or the lives of others. In that situation you would not want to use .45 shot, but real bullets. Its a crime to shoot when you did not feel you had to. Its actually possible your use of a less lethal round could be used as evidence against you, that you fired without believing you actually needed to.... and then you could be the one behind bars.
If you want a less lethal option that you can use when you do not necessarily fear immanent death, get a Taser.

Warning shots are going to be illegal. Not allowed to fire warning shots into the ground. If you fired into the ground you need to say you aimed for him and missed.
Warning shot says you did not yet fear for your life, or you should have shot the intruder. So you can be charged with firing a gun within a dwelling.Comment

I train in the desert for how I may need to shoot. Rolling out of the car door, Running, Moving from cover to cover, Etc. With handguns and rifles. I also make practice runs through the house with the 1911 and 18" 12 Ga. But that doesn't mean I want to kill anyone. I just want to be prepared.Comment

Since you can't really use deadly force unless you truthfully believe that your life or family's life is in danger, using something non-deadly like a mini shotshell is criminally negligent on your part.

Too many what if's here. A good face shot will, (most likely) stop him if he isn't wearing glasses. If he is wearing glasses, the threat just got closer. If he is running away from you, he may be running toward the kids room or toward your wife. Shotshell won't help there and a warning shot just allowed the perp to get closer to them and a shot wasted.

Its illegal to fire a gun in your home, you get an exception so you can shoot at someone if you think you or someone else is about to die. If you're shooting at the ground you obviously didn't think you or someone else was about to die, so you illegally fired a gun in your home. pretty simple, shoot to kill or don't shoot at all. Any warning shots are misses cause you were nervousComment
