Probably has something to do with op-rod pressures (at least with the M14 anyway, I dunno about the design of the other guns).

I heard that firing .40 in a 10mm is great way to practice the 10mm with low recoil.

I had a guy next to me at Angeles put one of my 9mm P226 mags in his .40. FTE, rocked slide, fired again. I said, "that sounded weird." He drops the mag and looks in the gun... I look at his boxes of 40, notice my missing mag... "Um, did you pick up my mag?"

Sounds like a mortar round being launched. Hollow.

I was at the range the other day and a couple guys were shooting 9mms and 40s and somebody eventually loaded the 9s into the 40. Only one shot to figure it out and no damage done. I imagine it would group rather poorly as the bullet bounced its' way out the barrel.
