    Stats are in...

How can we as Pro-2nd people, prevent this?

Disclaimer: I love my guns, but stats like this will come up.

Firearm homicide is the second leading cause of injury death among youths aged 10 to 19

These stats are taken to look worse then they are. They also include gang bangers who are committing crimes in these stats.

      blame the parents

it's the "at risk" youth killing each other, not "normal" youth

18 and 19 year olds are not kids.

Among children under age 1, airway obstruction is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death,
followed by motor vehicle occupant injury, drowning, and fire and burns.
          • Among children ages 1 to 4, drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury-related death, followed
by motor vehicle occupant injury, pedestrian injury, fire and burns, and airway obstruction.
          • Among children ages 5 to 9, motor vehicle occupant injury is the leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death, followed by pedestrian injury, drowning, fire and burns, and bicycle injury.
          • Among children ages 10 to 14, motor vehicle occupant injury is the leading cause of unintentional injuryrelated death, followed by pedestrian injury, drowning, fire and burns, and bicycle injury

so what they are really saying, is that from 14-19, a helluva lot of kids shoot eachother.....

          well DUH

prisons are full of gang banging Pieces of **** who love to shoot each-other.

If you controlled for prior criminal record that group would disappear.

What this study really says is that in order to be able to include the 10-14 year old age group (i.e. push the lower bound down far enough to plausibly consider these 'children') while still massaging out a sensational result, they had to bump the upper bound up to include the 18 and 19 year olds.

Its a statistic. You can pretty much take anything and make it worse than it is. Any study can be worked so the end result states what the people doing the study want it to say. I bet if you break it down instead of age groups you use who why how the gun was used you will have way different results.

This is old news. Gary Kleck and Don Cates reported this years ago. The amount of gun violence decreases exponentially from the inner city to the outermost part of the city, and more into the suburbs and rural areas. In rural areas, the percentage of gun owners is far higher than in the inner city, but gun violence is extremely low. This trend is due to the illegal drug trade, which shouldn't surprise anyone.

By the way, as a scientist, I take everything the CDC says with a huge grain of salt. They are not well respected by many scientists who work on public health issues. Be thankful that there are good objective academic criminologists out there working on these issues.

If you break those down in to more reasonable chunks (youth 10-15, young adults 16-19) you will likely see a drastic change in the conclusions and inferences from the data.

The common cold and flu kill more people in the US than guns.

"Firearm homicide and firearm suicide rates were the fourth and fifth leading cause of injury-related deaths in the U.S, respectively, during this time frame."

Let's take care of #1 to #3 leading cause of injury-related death in the US first, before we deal with #4 and #5.

“Youth are disproportionately impacted and central cities are the locations that really have to grapple with those problems,” she says. “We just lose too many youth each year to firearm homicide. It is not inevitable. We can do something about this.”

Running with the gangs, and getting into criminal activity is the 2nd leading cause of youths deaths, the title should read.

I just don't see it being that big of a difference in numbers either. It's one more person per 100k people in large urban areas? I mean really thats barely any difference at all!

Since when is 19 still a kid? Jeez when are you an adult? 30? Anyway it sez the death are up in major large metropolitan areas. Well yes being as I am from one I can attest to these facts cause most of those people are ignorant of gun safety. Gangbangin, crazed left alone kids who parents have to work 3 jobs to keep food on the table, and plenty of hatred cause most of these incidents. Gun safety isn't taking guns away from lawful people. It's educationg them on the uses, saftety and defense of guns.
