    Carry rules

Again, sorry if this is the wrong spot, or a FAQ...

But what are the rules in CA about carrying a firearm (handgun)? Not a CCW, but a regular gun owner with a gun in public. And transporting in a vehicle?

Mostly I would be taking it with me up to the mountains for protection against 4-legged animals. But just trying to get the rules down for all areas. Thanks.

It's.........complicated. Try clicking the wiki link directly above and search for "transporting". Then others can fill in the cracks.

OK, thanks guys. From a quick read over it looks like for transporting I can have an unloaded gun it a locked container in my vehicle (like a tool box in the bed of my truck, and maybe even a gun safe mounted in my truck) I can also carry the loaded clip in the same compartment, as long is it isn't loaded in the gun.

As far as carrying in public, it looks like you can carry an unloaded gun in a holster in open view not hidden in any way. I'm hoping that you can carry a loaded clip somewhere on your person at the same time, otherwise what's the point of carrying a gun in the first place. Hopefully someone can chime in on this.

Lastly, is there any circumstance where you can carry a loaded handgun in plain view. Like in a situation where I'm up in the mountains, far away from any populated areas, etc. I'm hoping common sense and judgment on the rangers or any LEO would kick in, but could a person without a CCW openly showing a loaded handgun on his belt get in trouble?

        Thanks again for the replies.

No gun mentioned. Moon clips maybe?

People will get on your case for calling a magazine a "clip." To answer your question about carrying a loaded firearm openly the answer is yes but only in certain areas. I believe you can on BLM land. Basically if you can fire a gun freely than you should be good to carry loaded openly or concealed. If I am wrong in any way I am sure someone will correct me soon.

Thanks, Yugo and BayAreaShooter. Yep, I'm new to firearms and these forums. Guess I gotta learn the ropes and the proper terminology. Sorry.

                          As an aide-memoire,
Mostly folks here are light-hearted on the clip/magazine distinction.
