ok, they find out through a complete check, not from DL, and is common routine to run one on anyone who is pulled over.

It's VERY easy to tell when/if I have a gun in the car, I'm doing the speed limit.

No AFS (Automated Firearms System) information is not included anywhere in a vehicle license or drivers license (DMV) computer check.

AFS information such as DROS can only be accessed by either running the persons name DOB ect. or the firearms serial number on the LEO's AFS inquiry screen

If a LEO wanted to check if the registered owner of a vehicle had handguns with DROS info in his name, he would first have to run the plate through the DMV computer and obtain the RO's name. Then he would have to run that name through the AFS computer and hope he would get a hit.

Since the vehicle registration information does not contain DOB info it's not a sure thing that just putting a name which was obtained from the registration check would reveal any AFS information due to there being to many similar names in AFS.

So technically, all he has to do is ask for your DL and then run your DOB and full name in the AFS to get a positive hit? Sounds easy.

I believe RAW's show as well. I have a couple friends that are LEO local to me, I'll ask them when I get a chance.

Ask them if it is standard operating procedure to run peoples info through the AFS when they pull them over.

Some insider information would be great. Thanks!

This^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ and on normal traffic stops for vehicle code violations, an AFS check is NOTusually done. The Officer has to specifically request it from Dispatch or the Officer can run it from His in car computer, if it is set up to do that. If an AFS check is requested, there's something else going on to prompt a check.

HAHAHA Nope. No stickers whatsoever on that truck. No gun gear in sight. After he peeked through my windows he noticed a green bag (which happened to be my range bag. Plain bag, no pockets, no logos) and asked if I had a gun in there. I rolled my eyes a bit and said NO. He asked me if I was sure and told me to not reach for the bag or anything else in the car. Stupid handgun registration crap A second unit arrived within a few minutes.
Clarify. If this is a normal range bag the LEO may be able to identify it as such because they do happen to be shooters as well. If it it just some random bag that you happen to use as a range bag then you got me. I have no clue how he knows if you have a gun or not other than it does pull up on a DL search.

I'll do that....I wonder what kind of response you'd get if you posted that question in the LEO forum here.

It seems like there is some misinformation about if the cops know or not. I do know that they put your DL# on the FFL DROS for handguns. Ill bet they are linked and it pops up when they run your licence.

Can someone explain why it would be a bad idea to lie, and say no? If they are being legally transported, then it should not matter. Cops lie to us all the time, and if saves me getting my stuff looked through and my rights violated, then I would lie too unless someone has a good reason against it. As far as I know, fibbing to a coppa isnt illegal, but I might be wrong.
No, I was not ordered out the car. I told the cop the truth- I had picked a gun up from an FFL earlier but it was NOT in the car. Ya ya, TMI, I know. It went fairly smoothly though. Got pulled over, asked if I had any guns, said no, handed DL and registration, cop came back, told me I was speeding (good thing I slowed down a lot before that stupid laser caught me ), asked again if I had any guns, went back to his car, came back and asked me where I was and whether or not I had been drinking (asked that a few times, too), another officer handed me the ticket, and I went home pissed off. Speeding tickets are a bunch of crap.

In santa barbara/santa barbara county, it is common for them to run a complete check when pulled over, not my words. from a Officer. Reason gave to me, was they can, and want to see your background. felon, on parole ect.

It is a green canvas bag with handles. No outer pockets. Just a top zipper. I know he couldn't have seen the bag when he first approached the vehicle. It was tucked in between my 2 back seats and it was 3am and DARK. He only saw it when he shined a flashlight at it. LAPD Sergent buddy of mine told me he can find out which firearms are registered to me if he does a "master inquiry." CHP could have ran my DL when the looked up the RO of the vehicle (which I believe is common practice).

Also, I do have a nasty little arrest on my record (dismissed ) that had a little bit to do with firearms. That could have been it.

ETA: I don't have good luck with firearms and LEOs. A few weeks after that arrest, I was randomly approached at a gas station by 2 LAPD officers who pulled up and said "hey, you still walking around with guns in your pants?" They were friendly about it. I said no and asked if they wanted to take a peek (while thrusting my pelvis in a joking manner) and they started laughing and said F no lol. I think one of their friends busted me before.
