When a cop pulls you over, does he automatically know you have guns?

Specifically handguns. Does the computer system tell him right off the bat that guns are registered to your name when he runs your plate?

No. A check has to be done for that.

I can attest that a CHP officer knew I owned firearms when he pulled me over.

He asked about 5 times whether or not I had any guns in the car and made some comment to the effect of "I know you own guns; do you have any in the car."
Will trade liquor/wine/beer for parts and accesories and ammo! PM me. Dont drink n shoot. Offer void where prohibited. Must be 21 or older, etc. etc.

and you just tell him you dont have anything illegal in the car/truck.

if you say yes, they will pull you out and search the car/truck, and if they find anything else other then the legal gun, you will get charged with that.

Do registered handguns show up after a DL check?

If you are transporting a firearm and they ask you if you have an guns in the car tell him yes. Then reiterate that you know he can legally check the firearm to make sure it is not loaded/not stolen but do not consent to any further search of your person or property. If he is accessing the area that your firearm is in and happens to see something illegal than thats your own fault and should not be transporting/owning anything illegal in the first place.

Why would you say yes? You're just inviting problems. Just don't answer the question.

I don't think they show up with a DL check but he could have asked if any were registered to that DL #.

Before and after. As soon as he approached my car, then after he ran my DL. He asked many times.

HAHAHA Nope. No stickers whatsoever on that truck. No gun gear in sight. After he peeked through my windows he noticed a green bag (which happened to be my range bag. Plain bag, no pockets, no logos) and asked if I had a gun in there. I rolled my eyes a bit and said NO. He asked me if I was sure and told me to not reach for the bag or anything else in the car. Stupid handgun registration crap A second unit arrived within a few minutes.

Did they order you out of the car? How did the rest of the stop go?

It seems like there is some misinformation about if the cops know or not. I do know that they put your DL# on the FFL DROS for handguns. Ill bet they are linked and it pops up when they run your licence.

Can someone explain why it would be a bad idea to lie, and say no? If they are being legally transported, then it should not matter. Cops lie to us all the time, and if saves me getting my stuff looked through and my rights violated, then I would lie too unless someone has a good reason against it. As far as I know, fibbing to a coppa isnt illegal, but I might be wrong.

once you say yes you are done and they will search you and the car it could become a felony stop.

They ask that question and many more as a way into the car to search it.

transporting a gun or having one in the car is legal as long as you follow the transporting gun laws. so my reply is, I have nothing illegal in the car.
