.40 Blazer issues - have you seen this before?

I went to the range with a friend last week and as I was loading up some mags for him I came upon a really short blazer round. After asking him about it he said that it was probably just from being cycled through the gun a bunch.

I'm not sure how exactly he explained it - I was a bit dumbfounded he didn't see a bigger issue with this in the first place. I heard something about that being the first round in the mag and after being chambered a couple times the bullets got pushed back from hitting the feed ramp.

I ended up finding 5 rounds like this. Here they are pictured next to a 9mm round.

Why is he chambering blazers over and over? Unless he's doing drills at a class or at a range where he has a safe direction for bullets to go, he's really being careless. The only reasons i can think of a those rounds having the bullets lodged in so deep is either: factory defects or this guy is using these as his primary HD/SD ammo and he's been clearing his gun and gasing them right back up repeatedly. There's plenty of the info on a quick google search about bullets getting set deeper into the casing with constant re-chambering. Tell him to stop that and to go get some respectable HD/SD rounds for goodness sake!

I completely agree. I think on top of this he was cycling them a bunch because he stores the mags unloaded so that the springs don't wear out

I'm trying to set him straight

Please do, that is extremely dangerous as the .40 is already pretty much on the edge of it pressure envelop.

If he is emptying his mags by running the rounds through the action...that is another very disturbing idea

BTW tell your buddy that springs dont get worn out by being compressed and left that way, even for long periods of time. The biggest thing that wears out a spring of any type is contracting and expanding repeatedly....

I was going to. I couldn't find any articles on it to back up the claim. Any ideas of where to look?

No I don't. Ive just heard this from people who know there metal...

I would like to see some hard evidence to support it though too, so if you do find an article then post it here.

I'm inclined to believe it just because it makes solid sense.

I had a couple of boxes of blazer brass .45 that had the bullets seated anywhere from 1/8 to 1/4 inch too deep in the case so it could have been straight from the box like that.

simply mechanical references or engineering theory would have that ref.

A spring only gets worn through "action" aka the compression and decompression cycle.

When left in a compressed or decompressed state, the spring's tensile strength is essentially preserved. It is ONLY through use (expand / contract) that springs wear out

It could have been the case with some of them. Most had scrapes from being cycled though.
