California law does not require the casing of longarms during transport (the 1000' Gun Free School Zone also does not apply). You can duct tape it to the hood if you want.

Federal law does require it to be cased or locked in a rack, in the 1000' GFSZ. Federal officer must charge you, though local LEO can detain you until then. Odds are pretty darn slim about that. No recent federal GFSZ violations are being told across the internets.

Now, for mental comfort, I would suggest that you do case them, to preclude any un-foreseen stop by LEO that would love to ask you all sorts of intimate and personal questions when he spots your uncovered and unsecured eeeeeeviiiillllllll rifles.

BTW, no rules for ammo transport, other than it cannot be in a position to be fired (chambered or in the magazine well/tube).

But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself...A murderer is less to fear. The traitor is the plague."......Cicero

I too am going to the range tommorrow, and always travel with my long guns cased, I'm more worried of them getting banged up. I run in an SUV,Expedition, and have never been bothered by leo. I also keep my ammo in ammo cans next to the Rifles and pistols.

What about a redi-mag? can a rifle's magwell be clear, but have a fully loaded magazine seated in the red-mag?

Yep. Redimag is not fireable so it's gtg.
If not chambered and not in the well it's gtg.
