    A few Fal n00b questions

    Greetings All,

This board along with Falfiles has been a great resource for me but I still have a few questions.

I just got a DSA califal and will be heading to Los Altos tomorrow, if the weather is good, to do the barrel break-in.

Do any of you have any recommendation as to break in a new barrel?

Whats a good distance to try to site in a new rifle(my only experience is with handguns, did have an AK once but aiming wasn't really its strong point)?

Whats a good copper bore cleaner?

If anybody is going to the Los Altos Range tomorrow and sees some noob with a Fal feel free to give some pionters.

    Thanks

Some argue the utility of breaking in a new barrel. Esp a "Battlerifle" barrel.
Nevertheless, there is always the "Fire one shot, clean. Fire two shots, clean. Fire five shots, clean......." on and on.
As far as sighting in the rifle, you could try at 50 yds and save some ammo, or try at 100 yds and use a little more ammo.
I recommend Hoppes 9, or Sweets 7.62 for heavy build-up (be careful with the Sweets cause its very strong -- dont leave it on for any longer than 15 mins.)

Is your barrel chrome lined? Can you even break in a chromed barrel?

With your FAL you kinda have to do different things...

        1) make adjustments to the gas system.
        2) make sure it functions properly with the gas setting you choose.
        3) then sight it in.

I do all of this on the 50 yard range. The only reason I check for function first is because when I try to sight it in while it's not functioning right... it just pisses me off and I'm not concentrating on the target all the much.

After I find that it functions right... I do my 3 shot sight in. adjust and take 3shots again. Then if I feel the need... I'll head to the 100 yard range and start over with the sight in.

As for barrel break in? What's that??

Sight it and function test at the 50, take it to the 100, then start dumping rounds. What I found on my FAL gas setting wise is that Arg. #1, Norinco #2, Wolf #5, Port. #3, Aussie #4, PMC #4, WCC #3, LC #4, India #2, and my reloads #5.

For NATO ammo, try around 2.5 inches high at 25 yards, adjust from there. You should be close enough a little past 200.

As posted before, check your gas adjustment.

I don't particularly accept break-in theories, though bench resters may have a different opinion.

                Barrel Break-in

                Barrel break-in = voodoo

Especially on a battle rifle. I think the only people who really benefit from barrel break-in procedures are the purveyors of cleaning supplies. Shoot your rifle and have fun.

                    1) The late Gale McMillan was pretty set against any sort of barrel break-in procedure. If there's anyone who knows anything about barrels, it was him. I'd say just go and shoot the thing and clean it properly after you are done.

                    2) Depends on what you are trying to do. I'm probably going to the range today to shoot/sight in my M14 and in order to achieve a 400 yard battle zero, you use a target set at 25 yards. Go figure. The battle zero allows you to attain hits on a man-sized target up to 400 yards by simply aiming COM.

I'd zero a battle rifle at no less than 200 yards.

                    3) Sweets 7.62 is definitely one of the most popular copper cleaners out there.

To allow you to shoot a wide variety of ammo in it without damaging the gun.
