The guy that got hit is a sensible person. If that had happened in California, they would have shut down the range and the person who was hit with the ricochet would have been called by over a dozen lawyers who want to sue the range.

a .223-caliber submachine gun bullet? Doesn't submachine guns use pistol bullets.

A lead tipped armor piercing round? Isn't that a soft tip.

Follow up on San Ramon Magic Bullet

Gun ranges on the Dublin base remained closed pending the result of the investigation....

...He said that he and his wife were informed about the proximity of the base when they bought the house, but they weren't too bothered by the practices. He said they can't even hear the shots if they are inside...

Now, about that Lawsuit?...let me see how this homeowner feels compared to the guy in Oklahoma (who actually got hit!):

So this is going to force him into bankruptcy, wah! emotional distress, wah! and the developer was negligent for putting the houses here (even though you were fully aware of the proximity of the range?) Do I have that about right? Yeah, I'd say a lawsuit is a pretty good bet - this guy is gonna sue everybody.

+1, I don't see how a bullet could travel a mile after hitting a metal target hanger. It's a police range, so wouldn't it be handgun ammo? That'll barely travel a mile if it doesn't hit anything before it comes down.

That sound awful fishy. How'd they know it was a bullet? It would have sounded EXACTLY like a rock smashing the window and bouncing off the shutter... which is exactly what a reasonable person would have assumed it was. Especially since he admits you can't hear the shooting when you're inside.
