Replacement Gun Return Shipping Question

Say I have a gun that is defective. It is shipped to manufacturer, they decide to replace it. From what I gather, it probably has to go through an FFL on the return, right?

If you've had experience with this, please respond. Did you have to pay a fee? I'd appreciate feedback with any other pertinent information. Thanks in advance.
