Check this stuff out. Can't say what it is or where to get it- only that it weighs almost nothing, and is as brittle as eggshells. Tried 9mm through 357 magnum- NO penetration- not even soft trauma to the clay behind it. Tried 3 shots from 45 acp on the same plate- stuff fractures, but no bullet penetration. And it's only 1/2" thick.

Pretty cool. I think HDPE(high denisity polyethylene) is bullet resistant as well but it is kinda heavy. If I recall correctly some trauma plates are made from special HDPE. -
HDPE in its plasic sheet form is not even stab resistant. They make milk bottles out of it. Still cool stuff though.
HDPE, processed properly becomes UHMWPE-
Ulta high molecular weight Polyethelene. They then make a fiber from the UHMW, called spectra. The stuff makes soft body armor. It is/was used as a replacement for Kevlar, has better properties, but has a higher rate of failure too.
This stuff we tested is not a PE derivative. It's brittle, and can be cast into a mold or void at room temp- it's ready to shoot in 1 hour.Comment

GE Plastics has a booth at ASIS International
Last year they gave out some samples of their plastic/glass combinations that stop .223 and .308! I was surprised that rifle rounds could be stopped.
If you can get to Las Vegas September 24-27, the Exhibition Hall is free.
