    Steel casing. A fire hazard?

Was told by my local indoor range that using ammo with a steel casing is a fire hazard. Now I understand how a bi-metal bullet can be, but a casing? I know, I know, their range-their rules. Is it because most steel cased ammo have bi-metal bullets?

Does the Blazer aluminum case attract a magnet?

Somebody is confused. I am not aware of any ranges banning steel cased ammo. Steel jackets or steel cores or steel in the gliding metal of a round yes.

Unless this is a range that keeps your brass because they want to resell it to reloaders. Then there might be a picky reason to not want steel or aluminum cases.

Most steel cased ammo is the Russian made Wolf/Bear brands, which have bi-metal jackets that are more prone to making sparks. The guy at your indoor range is just being an idiot, as it has nothing to do with the actual casings.

I think the guy is an idiot and confusing a jacket for a casing. And I do believe they are selling the brass and dont want to have to separate the Blazer casings from the brass. I was told "no ammo that attracts a magnet, bullet or casing". I dont think the aluminum Blazer attracts a magnet but my aunt was told she could not use that ammo there.

Steel casings causing a fire? He could just be confused of the idea of steel-core bullets as opposed to steel casings. It could be a ruse too; telling you that or banning steel casings because they collect the brass for either re-loading or taking them to a scrap-metal buyer and don't want steel mixed in. Get a magnet wand from Home Depot, take it with you, and tell them you'll be sure to pass it over all of your mess to pick up and separate your steel casings from their money-making "stash" of left-behinds from people that don't collect their brass.

Naw, not a fire hazard... but most indoor ranges reload the brass you leave, and they're too lazy to sort out the steel.

you figure it would be easy to sort if you had a big magnet

A lot of people confuse the terms "steel jacket" and "steel case" and use them interchangeably. While the chances of a steel cased cartridge having a steel jacketed or bi-metal bullet are much higher than a brass cased cartridge, it still stands that steel-cased DOES NOT equal steel jacket.

A steel cased cartridge that uses a lead or non-steel-jacketed bullet is no more a fire danger than a brass cased cartridge with the same bullet.

                  Someone is confused.

After that I quit listening. I stopped taking "their" legal advice a long time ago.

I think a Mini 14 could eject steel cases fast enough to start a fire. I know for sure that they can eject cases fast enough to give me a fat lip from three shooting lanes over.
