The federal law is cited where a "a safe, gun safe, gun case, lock box, or other device that is designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that is designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination, or other similar means" must be included with every handgun purchase.

So according to Federal Law if you are buying a handgun, one of those items must be included with your purchase. So you can sign a safe affidavit I suppose, but you are still going to have to be provided with one of those devices when you leave the store with a handgun. Sorry.

And as a dealer, I cannot hold for sale or give away anything not on the CA approved list.

    Thems is the rules.

Never been to a Turner's, but somehow I figure them for the type of business to remove the locks included in a new handgun case, whether or not it's actually a CA approved lock for that gun, and sell you another that cost them a couple of bucks.

I wrote BATF in June about that - since safes can usually hold more than one, requiring a new one with each purchase doesn't seem right.

Then again, we are talking about the gub'mint....

This old song again? I feel slightly ill.

Hey Kes, Can we sticky one of the many versions of this thread into the appropriate forum?

Librarian, I know this may be premature since you just sent the letter in June(yesterday in goobermint time) but, maybe we need a call to arms. You had the right idea by sending a letter to the BATFE. Maybe we could get an answer if all the FFL's sent in a request for clarification. I know we have many FFL 01's and 03's as members. If we all sent a letter, perhaps they would get off the dime and give us an answer. Just a thought.

Hey, participatory government is high on my list of Good Things - more communication, maybe more likely reasonable response. If you 01 and 03 licensees feel the urge, add your voices to the clamor for clarification. Makes sense to me.

If you never been to Turner's, why do you bad mouth them by calling them cheats and liars? I just bought a pistol at Turners. It came with a cable lock. Guess what, they didnt force me to buy another one. They didnt lie to me about anything and they didnt cheat me out of any money.

Turner's has earned (unfortunately) their reputation by consistently showing no care or concern for their customer. this comes in the form of indifferent customer service, employees with bad attitudes, and regularly fouling up paperwork. It sounds like the pistol you bought came with a CA DOJ approved lock. Lucky you. I devoutly hope that they are tying to change their poor reputation, but that reputation (again unfortunately) is something that THEY earned.

On a separate note, I heard (only a rumor at this point) that Turner's was recently sold. Maybe this is the dawn of a wondrous new age in which the customer is once again treated with courtesy and respect due them. Let's all cross our fingers. They DO have good stuff at good prices, after all.

Hmm .. maybe the San Diego area turners are an exception then.

Between San Marcos and Kearny Mesa Turners, I've bought 7 guns. Never had any paperwork messed up or poor service or anything. Never lied to about locks or safes or whatever.

I understand the indifferent attitude that some of the clerks might show as the place is constantly filled with windows shoppers that just come in to finger the guns. When I go in there, it's usually to buy something that I've handled and test-fired at the range, not just to mess around.. maybe I get better service cause Im actually buying something.

The window shoppers actually bother me more than the bother the employees because I have to sit there while they touch everything when I could be starting my DROS paperwork!

A recently resigned Turner's Salesman told me the new owners are going to ruin the chain.

must one buy a lock each time one buys a pistol?

could one bring in a ca aproved lock?

if not then some of us will have a lot of junk laying around, maybe filling up the land fills.

no cable lock works worth a dam, just need a good pair of pliers to open it up.
mid to large flat screw driver for a triger guard lock.

In theory, with a receipt dated within 30 days of the date you take possession.

Some people seem to believe that the federal law requires a lock be sold with each handgun; the 'provided with' language is, I think, less restrictive than that, but I don't do BATFE audits, so my opinion isn't so important.
